(July 10, 2016) - Portugal defeats France in the UEFA Euro final 1-0 with a goal by the unlikely hero Eder, who scored in the second half of the extra time.
Portugal played most of the match without their captain and star man, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was substituted early in the first half due to an injury.
Portugal became the most unlikely team to win a European Championship since Greece in 2004 (who defeated Portugal). The "Lusitans" were classified as not favorites in every game of the knockout stage due to the difficult group stage they played where they tie all 3 games and were on the border of elimination against Hungary in a game that Ronaldo save the Portuguese team with 2 goals in the 3-3 draw.
In the Knockout stage, they defeated Croatia 1-0 with a goal in the extra time by Ricardo Quaresma, in the quarterfinals, they defeated Poland in the penalty shootout and in the semifinals they defeated Wales with another goal by Cristiano Ronaldo.
In this final Portugal played the same way as always with a defensive proposition with Pepe, Fonte and William Carvalho as the defensive trio, betting for the speed of Ronaldo and Nani, and some magic for the youngster Renato Sanches.
Eder was going to be Portugal's Hero in the final scoring an amazing goal in the second half of the extra time giving Portugal their first ever major tournament win.
