(June 12, 2016) – Croatia defeats Turkey 1-0 in the first game of Group “D” of the Euro. The goal by Luka Modrić gave the Balkans the victory. With this victory the Croatians rest today being on the top of the group, that is shared by Spain and the Czech Republic that play tomorrow, June 13 at 9 am (ET).
A game with much history between both teams who debuted together in the UEFA Euro Finals in England 1996 where the Croatians won 1-0 against the Turks. Faced of again in Austria-Switzerland 2008 were the draw 1-1 in the quarterfinals with the Turks winning the game by the penalty shootout.
This was the 3rd time that Croatia and Turkey play against each other at the Euro Finals. Luka Modric decided the game for the Croatians with one of the best goals of the UEFA Euro 2016, a deflection by a Turkish defender that Luka Modrić got his foot on for the volley into the bottom left the corner of the goal with nothing to do for Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Babacan.
Croatia will play again next Friday, June 17, in St-Étienne against the Czech Republic while Turkey will play against Spain on the same day at Stade de Nice in Nice.
