On Wednesday, the United States Women’s National Team arrived at EverBank Field to face off against the Mexico Women’s National Team in an international friendly. The USWNT looked to continue their winning streak and ramp up their confidence before the World Cup qualifiers. The last time these teams faced each other was in the 2016 World Cup qualifiers, when the USWNT defeated Mexico 1-0. The streak continued for the USWNT when they defeated Mexico, 4-1.
As the USWNT took the field and awaited the starting whistle, fans began to cheer and chant. The referee blew the whistle, and the USWNT wasted no time, as midfielder Megan Rapinoe passed the ball to forward Mallory Pugh, but her shot was just shy of the goal and barely missed. Minutes later however, Rapinoe was able to find Pugh to score a beautiful close-range goal, to give the USWNT a 1-0 lead within six minutes of the start of the match.
The USWNT continued to apply the pressure, with a blocked shot by midfielder Lindsay Horan in the thirteenth minute. Shortly after, Mexico forward Monica Ocampo attempted a shot, but her shot was also blocked in the twentieth minute. The two teams started to trade shots back and forth but between missed shots and saved shots for both teams, the score remained the same heading into halftime.
Once the USWNT was in the locker room, USWNT head coach Jill Harris made the proper adjustments and led her team back out onto the pitch. As the USWNT started the second half, they waited no time to start scoring. After a missed goal attempt by USWNT defender Emily Sonnett, USWNT forward Alex Morgan was fouled in the penalty area. Morgan lined up and was able to connect at the bottom left corner of the goal to make the score 2-0 in the fifty-first minute.
Two minutes later, Horan connected with Morgan for another goal, to make the score 3-0 at the fifty-third minute. In the fifty-fourth minute, midfielder Carli Lloyd was able to find the back of the net to make the score 4-0. The USWNT was able to score an impressive three goals in three minutes.
Mexico was able to score though in the sixty-fourth minute by forward Katie Johnson to cut the USWNT lead to 4-1. After the goal, Harris made a few substitutions to bring in fresh legs and keep the team healthy, considering that this is a friendly match.
Even with the 4-1 lead, the USWNT did not let their foot off the gas and continued to take multiple shots on the goal. Unfortunately, all of the shots were either missed or saved which left the final score as 4-1.
The USWNT played an amazing game, with 20 shots towards goal and six on target, converting on four of them. Pugh was able to net her fourth goal of 2018 and is looking to score a many more before the World Cup. The USWNT travels to BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston on April 8th at 1:30 PM in a friendly rematch against Mexico.
