Another potential College Football Playoff elimination game is on the horizon and it's a big one between the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (9-0, 6-0 SEC) who go on the road to face No. 10 Auburn Tigers (7-2, 5-1 SEC) 2:30 PM CST on CBS.
Both teams are averaging 36 points a game and both have stellar defenses. The Bulldogs are only allowing 11.7 points per game while the Tigers just 16.9.
Georgia has a balanced attack, they can beat you with the run or the pass. Running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel are on their way to 1,000 yard seasons. Chubb has 140 carries for 867 yards with nine touchdowns. Michel has 90 carries for 710 yards and nine touchdowns. The Bulldogs have run 431 times for 2,514 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm has had a stellar year as well. Fromm is 95 of 150 for 1,459 yards with 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Four different receivers have 12 or more receptions on the year.
The Bulldogs will have their hands full stopping Auburn's running game as Kerryon Johnson has 15 touchdowns on the season to go along with 868 yards on 166 carries. Auburn has run the ball 424 times for 2,130 yards and 26 touchdowns. Whoever wins on the ground has a good shot at winning this one.
Tiger QB Jarrett Stidham has been efficient this year. He's 147 of 220 for 1,996 yards with 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He'll have to make some good throws in this one to help Auburn knock off the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs have already locked up the East division of the SEC and will make its first appearance in the championship game since 2012. This game also marks the fourth time these two teams are both ranked in the top 10 with Georgia being ranked higher for the first time. The all-time series is very close with the Bulldogs holding the edge 57-55-8. Georgia has won 11 of the past 15 games.
Auburn has Louisiana Monroe next week and then the Iron Bowl against No. 2 Alabama. If Auburn defeats Georgia, its winner takes all in two weeks against Alabama.
For Georgia, they could end up playing Auburn twice if Auburn wins and then goes on to defeat Alabama. Otherwise a win today and it's a showdown between No. 1 and potentially No. 2 in the SEC Championship with the winner going to the College Football Playoff.
