NC State senior defensive end Bradley Chubb keeps racking up awards for his stellar 2017 season. Chubb won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy given to the country's best defensive player. He was also a finalist for The Chuck Bednarik Award but was beat out by Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. Chubb was also named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and made both First-team All-ACC and the AP First-Team All-ACC. Also, he won the Ted Hendricks Award as the best defensive end in the nation.
"Going into the season, I wasn't expecting any of this. It's a blessing to be here, and I'm happy to be here," Chubb said.
Chubb has accomplished all of this and still has one game remaining. On December 29th at 2 PM CST the NC State Wolfpack (8-4, 6-2 ACC) will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils (7-5, 6-3 PAC-12), fresh off of hiring Herm Edwards as their new coach, in the Hyundai Sun Bowl.
The question remains if Chubb will play in the game or if he'll sit it out to avoid potential injury and focus on getting ready for the draft. Players sitting out bowl games has been something that's been going on for the past couple of seasons. Last year, Christian McCaffrey and Jabrill Peppers were among those who didn't play in bowl games. In contrast, Peppers Michigan teammate Jake Butt played in the bowl game and suffered a torn ACL and hurt his draft stock.
"I really haven't put much thought into it. I'm going to talk to my family after all of this is said and done and figure out what's best for me," Chubb said. Todd McShay has Chubb ranked No. 5 in his Top 32. Mel Kiper Jr. has Chubb 7th.
Chubb has 73 tackles (40 solo) with three forced fumbles and 10 sacks. He also has 26 tackles for a loss for a total of -106 yards. Chubb also has a blocked kick. And, his 10 sacks led the ACC and tied for 9th in the nation.
For his entire career, Chubb has 198 tackles with 54.5 being for a loss. He also has 25 sacks and six forced fumbles. "I just put my head down and kept working and kept doing the little things that I needed to do," Chubb said.
Chubb is just the third player in the ACC to have won the Hendricks Award. He's the first since 2010. Chubb also made a bit of history, being only the sixth player all-time and the second ACC player to win both the Hendricks Award and the Nagurski Trophy in the same season.
