TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Milica Kubura drove home a match-high 18 kills while teammates Katie Horton and Mara Green added 14 each to lead 16th-ranked Florida State to a four-set victory (25-16, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17) over Clemson in Atlantic Coast Conference in Tully Gym on Wednesday afternoon.
Kubura was the catalyst to a Florida State (23-5, 16-3 ACC) offense that finished with 65 kills, 63 assists and a .389 hitting percentage. The junior outside hitter established her season-high hitting percentage (.750) as she recorded double-digit kills for the 17th time this season on 24 total swings.
Green was also highly efficient for the Seminoles, posting a .722 attack percentage after driving home 14 kills in 18 attempts. It is the sixth time in 2016 that the senior middle blocker has finished with at least a .600 hitting percentage.
Setters Brianne Burkert (30 assists) and Hailey Luke (23) distributed the ball effectively throughout the afternoon as Green and Kubura became the first Seminole tandem in the rally scoring era to post at least a .700 hitting percentage against a league opponent in the same match.
Horton capped off her 24th career double-double by recording 15 digs, 14 kills and .310 hitting percentage. She penetrated the Clemson (6-25, 1-18 ACC) defense on 29 occasions to keep pace with Kubura in double figure kill outings (17) on the season. It marks her 10th straight match with double-digit digs dating back to a 15-dig outing at Virginia on Oct. 21.
Green highlighted the defensive efforts with seven total blocks (six assisted), while Melanie Keil added four blocks, four kills and three key service aces. Cecile Woie anchored the back row with a match-high 18 digs and was one of six Seminoles with at least five digs.
Two strikes each from Horton and Kubura helped the Seminoles grab a slim 5-3 advantage in the fourth set. Keil sparked the offense with a service ace and Florida State scored eight of the next 12 points to establish a 13-7 advantage behind back-to-back kills from Luke and Stasa Miljevic.
Green slammed home her third kill of the set to put Madison Sullivan in serve for Florida State. Sullivan responded by scoring three points to stretch the Noles’ lead to 21-12. Horton drove home two kills and Burkert added an ace to help the Florida State earn its 10th win at Tully Gym this season.
Facing a 6-5 deficit early in the third set, Keil stepped up in the clutch as she used her service game to score 10 unanswered points for the Seminoles. Keil recorded one service ace and forced Clemson to commit three errors in that stretch, while Green responded with two blocks to make for a 15-6 Florida State advantage.
Clemson countered the Seminoles’ run by recording six of its next eight points off kills to pull within five, 19-14. After a brief timeout, Florida State got itself back on track with a series of strikes by Kubura and Keil. Keil and Luke added one service ace down the stretch to complete the eight-point victory.
A pair of kills by Green along with an improved Clemson defense resulted in a six-all tie as the two teams battled early in the second frame. Two assisted blocks by Keil and the solid service game of Horton allowed the Seminoles to assume an 11-8 advantage.
However, Clemson capitalized on two kills from Tori Woogk to pull even at 12-all. A back-and-forth battle ensued as the two teams endured six ties over the next 24 combined points, resulting in a 24-24 deadlock. The Tigers converted kills by Megan McGinley and Woogk to knot the match at 1-1 heading into the intermission.
The trio of Horton, Green and Kubura registered two kills apiece inside the first 15 points as Florida State establish a 10-5 lead in the opening set. The Seminoles got into an offensive rhythm as they drove seven kills among the next nine Florida State points, including three off the hand of Kubura, to grab a 19-12 advantage.
A Clemson timeout was not enough to derail the Seminoles’ offense who added two kills by Calkins in the final six points as Florida State claimed the opening set by nine points.
Florida State returns to the court to face the Georgia Tech on Friday as part of Senior Day festivities in a match set for 1 p.m.
