(June 10, 2016) – Chile wins their first 3 points in the tournament after defeating Bolivia 2-1 thanks to Bayern Munich’s midfielder, Arturo Vidal. With this victory, Chile still has a chance to qualify to the next round if they defeat Panama in their next game. Bolivia is all out of chances after 2 losses; this is Bolivia's last game in the 2016 Copa America.
The game started rough for both teams neither team could manage to keep possession for a good amount of time due to fouls by the other team. Chile was a dangerous team in the first half thanks to the excellent work of Alexis Sanchez and Fabian Orellana on the sides, while Arturo Vidal was playing as a box-to-box midfielder defending and attacking.
The goals were going to come in the second half with Arturo Vial opening the score for Chile after bad defending by Bolivia. Vidal found a free ball inside of the box scoring easily against Carlos Lampe.
Bolivia was going to tie the game in the 61st minute thanks to an incredible free kick definition by Jhasmani Campos. Campos scored from 33 yards away from the goal with a curve shot that surprised Chilean goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo.
During the last minutes, Chile pushed forward trying to get their winning goal creating an opportunity with a bicycle kick from Eduardo Vargas. Vargas accidentally hit a Bolivian defender Ronald Eguino in the head, Eguino lost his conscience immediately and aided by the medical team on the field which stopped the game for 5 minutes. Eguino will have some test to see the severity of his injury.
With the time lost the referee added 8 minutes for stoppage time where Chile took advantage of Bolivia, that was playing with 10 men due to Eguino’s injury and without any changes left. Chile created several critical challenges and was awarded a penalty kick in the last minute due to a handball by a Bolivian defender. Arturo Vidal was not going to miss and settled his double, and the first win for Chile in the cup.
Chile will travel to Philadelphia next Tuesday, June 14, to face Panama to try for a ticket to the next round, while Bolivia will end their participation in the Copa America Centenario against Argentina on the same day.
