(June 7, 2016) – The United States defeated Costa Rica, 4-0, with an amazing performance by Jürgen Klinsmann’s players. With this victory the United States gets their first 3 points of the tournament after their first defeat against Colombia.
The game started well for the United States with an early penalty kick awarded after Bobby Wood was pushed by Gamboa inside of the box giving the opportunity to Clint Dempsey to score the first goal of the game, Dempsey wasn’t going to miss and he scored his 50th goal with the US national team in the 9th minute of the game.
With this goal the United States broke the Costa Rican midfield and continued to push forward creating several chances, until the 37th minute of the game when Jermaine Jones scored from outside the box to double the US lead. Following Jones’s goal 5 minutes later, Bobby Wood got his chance on goal and he didn’t miss and scored the 3rd goal for the US.
During the second half, Costa Rica tried to get to Guzan’s goal without any luck and the US took advantage of their desperation to score the 4th goal in the 87th minute of the game thanks to Graham Zusi, who scored coming off the bench.
The United States will travel to Philadelphia next Saturday, June 11, to sealed their ticket to the next round against Paraguay, while Costa Rica will finish their participation in this Copa America when they play against Colombia on the same day.
