ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF men’s basketball failed to keep pace with Memphis on Tuesday night at CFE Arena in a high-scoring affair, resulting in a Tigers win 97-86.
Up until six minutes remaining in the first half, the Knights (10-8, 4-3 AAC) were going blow-for-blow with the Tigers (13-7, 4-3 AAC), but a 10-2 by Memphis had UCF scrambling to get back in to the game.
Memphis’ Shaq Goodwin was the key to the Tigers’ success in the first 20 minutes, scoring 24 of his career-high 35 points.
Coming out of the locker room after halftime, the Black & Gold trailed by 14 but quickly chipped away at the Tigers’ lead, making it four just three minutes into the second half.
Memphis would answer UCF’s 10-0 run with a pair of three pointers to bring the lead back to double digits, but junior Justin McBride wasn’t going to let the Tigers run away like in the first half. McBride took it to the Tigers head on, tallying 14 of his team-high 20 points in the second half.
As Memphis started keying on McBride down low, UCF caught fire behind the arc, again making it a four-point game with 9:24 remaining in regulation. Unfortunately, the Tigers also got hot, scoring on their next five possessions to go on a 10-1 run.
The Knights made one last valiant effort to reel in the Tigers, making it a seven-point game with 1:34 remaining, but Memphis closed out the game at the free-throw line, draining 6-of-7 free throws to hold on for a 97-86 victory.
