Junior quarterback Jerrod Evans threw a screen pass to running back Travon McMillian and the junior took it 15 yards into the end zone midway through the first quarter. It was not much a game after that, as the Virginia Tech Hokies rolled to a 49-0 systematic beat-down of the Boston College Eagles.
After the first Hokies’ score it looked like we might get a game with much action as senior captain Myles Willis instantly took the kickoff to the house. However it was negated due to a block in the back penalty. Boston College just could not move the ball all day as they mustered just 124 yards of total offense, and coughed up. They attempted to get the passing game going, but quarterback Patrick Towles was just 9 for 28 and 80 yards and an interception.
The typically dominant Eagles’ defense could not contain the fast pace Hokie offense. Evans threw for 253 yards and five touchdowns. He connected with Isiah Ford 4 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns. The lone highlight for the defense was Jon Johnson's interception in the third quarter. Senior defensive end Kevin Kavalec had a career-high ten tackles for the unit.
After the game, Boston College head coach Steve Addazzio talked about getting an embarrassing loss behind you. “We have to go back and take a look at the tape. We have to improve and get better. We have to teach our young guys how to handle this environment.” Addazzio continued to drive the point home, “Being in this kind of environment and what it takes to turn back that tide. We will go back and do that, and we will move forward."
Johnson, a senior captain, echoed the sentiment. "It was tough, but that's the game of football. We just have to get on the film and try to get better. We are going to have those types of things come our way, so we just have to be ready for them."
Boston College will look to bounce back at their home opener next Saturday against Wagner.
