Chestnut Hill, MA - Three plays.
That is all it took for Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson to make his presence known at Alumni Stadium. After the Boston College defense stuffed the first two rushing attempts from the Cardinals, Jackson took off on a read option for a 69-yard score.
After that, Jackson and the Cardinals (8-1,6-1 ACC) would keep scoring fast and often on their way to a 52 to 7 conference victory over the Eagles (4-5,1-5). He would finish with 7 total touchdowns on the day, along with 231 yards passing and 185 rushing yards.
The Heisman frontrunner would connect with receivers James Quick and Jaylen Smith for scores 30 and 44 yard scores to jump to a 21 to nothing first quarter lead. All three of the first quarter scoring drives took less than 1 minute and 38 seconds.
The second quarter opened up with with Jackson finding Quick again for a 10-yard score, that was aided by an Eagle fumble on that yard line. Jackson would also find Cole Hikutini for a 5-yard score. Late in the quarter, Jackson would throw and interception and be taken out to end the half. It was later disclosed that it was a cramp in his forearm that led to that sequence. At the half it was taken care of and he is okay now.
Despite a third quarter fumble Jackson would continue to add to his totals, running for scores of 13 and 53 yards. He now has 45 total touchdowns on the year.
With the victory, the Cardinals who were ranked 7th in the College Football Playoff Top 25, made a statement that they hope resonates with the CFP Committee.
When asked if they have to continue to beat by large margins Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino said, “I guess we do. It’s sad because there’s something called sportsmanship.” He added, “Maybe I made a mistake. Maybe looking back at against Florida State, we should of kept the starters in and score 80 points.”
For Boston College, the growing pains on offense continue. Rushing for just 57 yards, and not being able to sustain drives, they finished with out getting into the opponents red zone. Their lone score came on a 39-yard touch down pass from quarterback Patrick Towles to running back Tyler Rouse.
After the game, Eagles head coach Steve Addazzio talked about the level of completion they were up against today. “I would say that I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s one of the top three most talented teams in America right now.” Adding a single statement on Jackson, “That quarterback is electric.”
Jackson and the Cardinals will continue their respective quest for the Heisman and College Football Playoff, at home next Saturday night against Wake Forest.
Boston College will try to rebound at No. 22 Florida State on Friday night.
