Chestnut Hill, MA – In Boston College’s home opener against Wagner, midway through the second quarter, the Eagles found themselves hanging on to a 14-10 lead after the Seahawks hit a 34-yard field goal. Facing third and long quarterback, Patrick Towles found sophomore wide receiver Mike Walker along the sideline for 18 yards to extend the drive. On the very next play, Towles hit Jeff Smith another sophomore wide-out deep for a 58-yard scoring strike.
The floodgates opened as head coach Steve Addazzio’s team ran their way to a 42-10 victory over the FCS opponent. Even though the deep ball changed the game it was the running game, that sealed it.
Coming in Addazzio felt the running game was stagnant. His Eagles made a concerted effort this week to change that. It paid off as the team rushed for a total 300 yards and 4 touchdowns.
“The first few weeks what we didn’t do well was run with consistency.” Addazzio added, “it’s a work in progress, little by little we want to drive that point home.”
John Hilliman led the way for the rushing attack with 19 carries, gaining 83 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was the 6th time in his career that the junior running back has had multiple scores. Redshirt freshman Davon Jones also emerged in the ground game adding 90 yards on 12 carries.
Hilliman see’s the unit that also includes senior co – captains Myles Willis and Tyler Rouse as a tight knit group. “We call ourselves the Committee.” He also talked about the emphasis on the ground this week “As a running back you obviously want the running game to be good; so getting back to it was great.”
Quarterback Patrick Towles also added to the running effort with 2 scores and 46 yards, to go along with his 157 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air.
Wagner opened up the scoring early in the first quarter as junior quarterback Alex Thompson scrambled when he could not find any open receivers and was able to break free for a 55-yard run.
Boston College’s defense was staunch after that, as the FCS opponent was only able to gain 107 yards. Junior defensive end Harold Landry starred with a team high of 6 tackles, 5 of them for loss, and 3 sacks.
The Eagles will look to continue their improvement as they host the University of Buffalo next Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 pm at Alumni Stadium.
