Well, here we are on the eve of the home opener, and the Eagles have a record of 1-2 and the 2 losses coming at the hands of ACC opponents which makes it 10 straight conference losses. Last Saturday in Blacksburg, Virginia they were utterly embarrassed in all phases of the game by the Virginia Tech Hokies losing 49-0.
Boston College will be welcoming FCS opponent Wagner Seahawks with open arms this week. There will not be much to take away from this game as the Eagles should walk away with an easy victory. However, Head Coach Steve Addazzio will be looking for his team to get their confidence back.
Let’s take a look at the questions that Super Fan’s will be pondering as they are firing up the grills at the Heights the first time this year.
Is there anything we can take away from last week’s game?
This team is still young and inexperienced on offense, and it showed. The Patrick Towles led offense was only able to gain 124 yards as it was completely shut down by the veteran Hokie defense.
The defense was just flat out tired as it could not get off the field. It also continues to be susceptible to big plays.
The only good thing that I can think of is they went into a hostile environment against a good ACC opponent, and the young players will have that experience as we get deeper into the schedule.
What about the coaches? How does this loss affect them?
Let’s be realistic, it made Addazzio’s seat a lot warmer. Also, you have to think first-year offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler might not be in Chestnut Hill for long if this lack of production keeps up.
Addazzio is in his fourth year. The first two were 7-6 seasons in which he took the Eagles bowling. Last season was a disappointing 3-9 season. His predecessor Frank Spaziani lost his job after his fourth season and back to back losing campaigns.
You have to think, in a season where the team is built mostly on Addazzio’s recruits, Athletic Director Brad Bates will be looking for improvement. It will be a situation worth keeping and an eye on throughout the season.
What can we expect against Wagner?
On paper, it should be a blowout. However, Wagner is off to their first 2-0 start in 10 years and has scored 38 points in each of their first two games, albeit against Saint Anslem (Division II) and Concordia (NAIA).
If the Seahawks can get anything going on offense, look for junior QB Alex Thompson to lead the way. He has thrown for over 400 yards and 4 TDs this season. He will be accompanied in the backfield by junior RB Denzel Knight who has rushed for 251 yards on just 28 carries and 2 touchdowns.
Should I even ask for a prediction?
All you have to do is look at last years 76-0 victory over Howard for what to expect from this game. Look for the defense to get a little bit of its swagger back and for some young players to gain experience and playing time. Quite possibly we will get our first look at Darius Wade at quarterback this season.
Weekly Fun Facts:
Boston College has won 24 consecutive games against FCS opponents. Their last loss was at the hands of UMass 27-0 in 1978.
Wagner is the only team in the nation to face opponents from four different classifications (FBS, FCS, DII, NAIA).
