(Coral Gables, FL) The Duke Blue Devils beat the Miami Hurricanes 83-75 in a streaky affair that saw both sides go on double digit runs in the second half.
The 25th ranked Miami Hurricanes finish their run of three straight games against ranked opponents against the 5th ranked Blue Devils.
The Canes and Blue Devils traded blows in the first half, as it was a back-and-forth contest. The Hurricanes were down by seven points with three and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Although, the Canes were resilient enough to claw back into the game.
With less than two minutes in the first half, Miami guard Lonnie Walker IV hit a big three-pointer to give The U a 40-39 lead.
There was a total of ten lead changes by the end of the first half. At the end of the half, Duke freshman guard Gary Trent Jr. hit a buzzer beater three to give the Blue Devils the 42-40 edge going into halftime.
Miami forward Dewan Huell lead the Canes with 11 points, and his teammates Walker IV was not far behind with nine points and fellow Miami guard Chris Lykes added eight points at the half. Walker IV finished the half 3-4 from behind the arc. Walker led the Hurricanes from the three-point line.
Duke’s first half scoring leaders were Trent Jr. with 12 points and forward Wendell Carter with 11 points.
Miami went on a tear early in the second half, going on a 14-0 run in the first seven minutes of the half. By the end of the run, Miami had a 56-44 lead. It seemed as if the Blue Devils did not have an answer for Miami’s fast pace offense, but that changed fairly quickly.
Duke switched over to a zone defensive scheme, and quickly went on a 15-0 run which flipped their 10-point deficit to a 71-66 lead with 3:30 remaining in the final half.
“It reminded me of a couple games in Portland,” said Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski on his team’s ability to rally back. “When we were down double digits against Texas and Florida. Two other really outstanding teams, and we reminded our guys that we could make this just like Portland. We can come back and do this, and they did.”
Trent Jr. helped ice the game by scoring seven points in the last minute and a half to help the Blue Devils get to the final score of 83-75.
Miami’s scoring leaders at the final buzzer were Walker IV with 19 points and Huell with 18 respectively. Additionally, Huell finished the contest with a double-double since he had 13 rebounds to go with his 18 points.
“Huell is really good, Huell is really good,” said Coach K about Dewan Huell’s game. “He’s their leading scorer. Everyone is talking about everyone else. We told our guys, ‘Look he is their leading scorer, and they don’t really throw it into him.’ Tonight, he really ran the court about as well as anybody I’ve seen this year except [Marvin] Bagley.”
Trent Jr. led Duke in scoring with an impressive 30 points. Guard Trevon Duval and Carter finished with 17 and 15 points respectively.
The Blue Devils’ next game is Saturday, January 20th at 4:00 P.M. EST when they host Pittsburgh. Miami’s next game is Sunday, January 21st at noon against NC State.
