Coral Gables, FL - The Miami Hurricanes thrashed the Navy Midshpemen 89-55, improving their record to 2-0 on the season.
Miami dominated Navy the entire first half, and by halftime the Canes had a comfortable 41-24 lead. Miami’s statistical leaders at the break were DJ Vasljevic with 10 points, Dewan Huell with 10 boards, and Anthony Lawrence II and Bruce Brown Jr. with two assists apiece.
The Midshepmen statistical leaders were Hasan Abdullah with 8 points, Bryce Dulin with 5 rebounds, and Tom Lacey and Evean Wieck with two assists each.
A big contributor to the Canes’ impressive first half performance was in part due to out rebounding the Midshepmen 27 to 16. Ten of those rebounds were offensive which put them in prime position to score.
“Yesterday at practice we tried to explain some things to the guys, andwe made an adjustment in our press attack,” said Miami Head Coach Jim Larrañaga when asked about his team’s first half performance. “We’ve been having Anthony Lawrence inbound the ball, and trail the play. And because the other teams we play play a three-quarter court press that can slow us down. We moved Anthony down the floor, and he played in the middle of it because he can handle the ball really well and he’s very comfortable there. So, I thought that helped us get off to a good start where our two guards, either Bruce Brown and Ja’Quan Newton had the ball, they pushed it ahead and got us immediately into offense. Whereas, on Friday night we were very slow getting started.”
The second half was more of the same from the Canes. They outscored Navy 48-31 in the final half to help them win 89-55.
Miami’s Dewan Huell’s performance stuck out on the box score due to getting his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. When asked about his first double-double Huell said, “Yes, first of many.” Which just embodies the swagger that the University of Miami is famous for.
The Hurricanes additionally had five players that finished in double digits with points. Vasljevic lead the team with 16 points, and Newton and Huell both had 14 total points on the night. Ebuka Izundu also had 12 buckets, and finally Anthony Lawrence finished with 10. Surprisingly, senior guard Bruce Brown Jr. struggled the entire night only scoring 3 points on the night.
“Yeah, he missed some shots, but he’s such a good player for him to go 1-10, 0-3 that’s uncharacteristic,” said Larrañaga. “He didn’t even make the free throws, he was 1-2 from the foul line, but he’s a very good shooter. And he’s just a very good player that plays very hard and competes. So, for us to get five guys in double figures, and him not be one of them. It says we’ve got good balance.”
The Hurricanes next game is this Thursday evening at 7:00 EST when Florida A&M come to town.
