(Orlando, FL) Orlando Pride tied 1-1 in their second season opener against Utah Royals at the Orlando City Stadium. Royals midfielder Gunnhildur Jonsdottir and Pride forward scored for each of their teams.
The scoring opened just three minutes after the initial whistle from the referee. Royals midfielder Diane Matheson sent a cross inside the box looking for midfielder Jonsdottir who was able to one-touch into the back of the net. Despite Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris’ dive, the ball went through her left-side, which gave Utah the 1-0 lead. Orlando Pride started creating more chances as the minutes went by. At the seventeenth minute, Orlando had their first chance from a corner kick. After the ball was cleared from Utah, Pride defender Ali Krieger shot from outside the box but the ball went slightly over the top bar. Two minutes later, the game witnessed a polemic call from the referee. It all started when Orlando midfielder Dani Weatherholt drove the ball into the box and took the shot. The ball hit on a defender’s face, but the referee called a penalty. Even though the visitors complained, the referee had already made the call. Orlando Pride’s forward, Marta, was in charge of executing the penalty for the home team and equalizing the score. Utah’s captain and defender, Becky Sauerbrunn earned a yellow card after complaining about the referee’s decision. In the 28th minute, Pride forward Alex Morgan dribbled her way into the box. After finding some space, she took the shot but Royal goalkeeper Abby Smith went down and grabbed the ball easily. The last minute of the first half we witnessed how Alex Morgan collided with Smith during a battle for a long pass. The Pride player got the worse part and had to step off of the field; we are unsure if there is a serious injury or not. During the halftime, forward Chioma Ubogagu came on to replace Morgan. Four minutes into the second half, Pride forward Sydney Leroux had a huge chance with a header thanks to a cross from Orlando defender Shelina Zardosky. The second half did not witness any other clear chances. However, Orlando Pride was dominating the ropes of the game, while Utah Royals took a more defensive approach and waited for a counter-attack. The match registered a total percentage of 54% of ball possession for Orlando Pride and 46% for Utah Royals. Pride had seven shots (three on target), while Utah had a total of seven shots (two on target). Orlando Pride starting XI (4-3-3): [G] Ashlyn Harris; [D] Poliana, Ali Krieger, Shelina Zardosky, Carson Pickett; [M] Dani Weatherholt, Toni Pressley, Christine Nairn; [F] Sydney Leroux, Alex Morgan, Marta. Orlando Pride Communications Ubogagu joins Alex Morgan, Ashlyn Harris for November friendlies ORLANDO, FL. - Orlando Pride forward Chioma Ubogagu received her first call-up to the senior U.S. Women’s National Team on Tuesday afternoon, joining teammates Alex Morgan and Ashlyn Harris on the 23-player roster that will head into camp to prepare for its final two matches of the year. The U.S. WNT will face Canada on Nov. 9 at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada (10 p.m. ET on ESPN2) and on Nov. 12 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. (9 p.m. ET on FS1). “The call-up is a worthy reward for the very successful 2017 season Chi had,” Pride Head Coach Tom Sermanni said. “Her game and confidence grew throughout the season and, with it, came enhanced performances. This will be a great opportunity for her to keep learning at the highest level.” After being acquired via trade with the Houston Dash on Jan. 23, Ubogagu had a breakout season with the Pride, scoring four goals and adding three assists. Ubogagu’s first goal in purple came on May 14, netting the first score that sparked a three-goal day and guided the Pride to its first win of the season over the then-undefeated North Carolina Courage. The forward previously featured at the U-18, U-20 and U-23 level, helping the U-20s win the 2012 U-20 Women’s World Cup and CONCACAF Championship. Morgan had a highlight-worthy season of her own, finishing fifth in the league with nine goals despite only playing in 13 matches en route an NWSL Second XI honor earlier in the month. The forward enters the camp with five goals at the national level this year, the most by any player on the U.S. WNT. Harris battled back from an early-season injury that saw her miss 11 matches. Despite that, the goalkeeper totaled a 5-0-2 record over the team’s final seven matches and led the Pride to the team’s first-ever playoff berth. Harris earned her 14th cap in the U.S. WNT’s last match, combining with teammate Jane Campbell for a 6-0 shutout over Korea Republic. NWSL Championship at Orlando City Stadium on Oct. 14
ORLANDO, FL. - The No. 3 Orlando Pride (11-6-7, 40 points) is one win away from playing for the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) title on its home ground, but first must face No. 2 Portland Thorns FC on Saturday afternoon in a win-or-go-home match. The Pride travel to play Thorns FC at 3:30 p.m. ET at Providence Park in the semifinal round. The game will be broadcast on Lifetime with Jenn Hildreth, Aly Wagner, Julie Foudy and Dalen Cuff on the call. Fans can also watch online at mylifetime.com or follow on the Pride’s official Twitter, @orlpride. The winner of Saturday’s match will move on to face the winner of Sunday’s North Carolina vs. Chicago Red Stars game in the 2017 NWSL final match, which will be played at Orlando City Stadium on Oct. 14. “[Portland] are a very experienced team. They’re a team used to winning. They’re a team that has a terrific home record. But we’ve just have to look after our own game,” Head Coach Tom Sermanni said. “Every game we’ve played since early in the season has been a pressure game and I don’t really see this one as much different. [We are] a team that doesn’t want to lose anything and that’s a great characteristic to have.” Orlando finished the 2017 regular season last weekend with a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 1 North Carolina. Australian international Alanna Kennedy scored in dramatic fashion, sending the Pride into the third seed and clinching the team’s first-ever postseason berth with a free kick golazo in the 91st minute. Kristen Edmonds opened the scoring in the match, finishing off a cross from Chioma Ubogagu, while Marta added her team-leading 13th goal of the year on an assist from Alex Morgan. The win extended Orlando’s unbeaten streak to nine straight games, the best span in the team’s short history, and marked the second straight month the Pride went undefeated. Marta was named the NWSL Player of the Month for September, while both she and Kennedy were named to the September Team of the Month this week. Portland has had a similar string of results, going 5-0-1 over its last six games. The Thorns closed the regular season with a 3-1 win over the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday. Australian forwards Hayley Raso and Ashleigh Sykes put the Thorns up 2-0 in the first half, before Nadia Nadim scored from the penalty spot in the 88th minute. Saturday’s game will be a replay of one from just two weeks ago, when the Pride and Thorns drew 0-0 at Orlando City Stadium. In a battle of Orlando’s high-scoring offense against Portland’s stingy defense, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard, with shot on goal just 2-1 in Orlando’s favor. Both of the Pride’s shots on target came from the boot of Morgan, who will face her former team this weekend. Morgan, 28, was one of the Pride’s first three signings, acquired from Thorns FC on Oct. 26, 2015. Orlando, which scored just 20 goals in its inaugural season, led the NWSL in total offense with 45 goals across 11 different scorers in 2017. The Thorns defense, however, was the best in the league, allowing just 20 goals to opponents over 24 matches. The Pride earned their first point against Portland in that last meeting, but have fallen to the Thorns in both of the last two meetings at Providence Park. Defender Steph Catley scored the franchise’s first-ever goal in its inaugural match on April 17, 2016. Orlando will be without young midfielder Camila, who suffered a torn ACL and an MCL sprain in the 32nd minute of last weekend’s match. Camila, who played for the Houston Dash in 2015, is the third on the Pride in goals (4) and second in assists (5). Rookie Rachel Hill or veteran forward Jasmyne Spencer are expect to start in her absence. Spencer, 27, would earn her 100 NWSL appearance -regular season and playoffs - should she play on Saturday. Tickets to the 2017 NWSL Championship are available at NWSLsoccer.com/championship or by calling (855) ORL-CITY. (Orlando, FL) Orlando Pride tied 0-0 after facing Portland Thorns FC at the Orlando City Stadium. Pride is still fighting to clinch a point in the playoffs and waits for Seattle Reign to draw or lose.
Neither Orlando Pride nor Portland Thorns could score Saturday afternoon. Orlando dominated the reins of the game and suppressed Thorns’ game. Portland managed to create a few chances, but nothing alarming for Orlando. Five minutes into the game, forward Chioma Ubogagu had the first chance for the home girls. The 25-year-old shot with her left-foot from outside the box and the ball went over the goal. In minute 12, forward Marta threw a ball to forward Alex Morgan. The USWNT international was face to face with Portland’s goalkeeper, Adrianna Franch, but her shot went directly into her hands. In the 34th minute, Morgan stroke from outside the box with her left-foot. Franch had to dive into her left side to save the ball by sending it to a corner kick. Minute 40 was witness of the clearest chance for the visiting side for the whole game. Midfielder Ashleigh Sykes connected a pass with forward Hayley Raso who returned the ball to the midfielder. Sykes ran her way into the box and shot as she was face to face with Pride’s goalkeeper and captain, Ashlyn Harris. The keeper intercepted the shot, but the ball still in its way into the goal. However, defender Camila scooped the ball out. In the post-game press conference, Camila addressed the media speaking on her save and Harris “That was for Ashlyn, she made the defense. I am happy for that, but it is on her…” After four minutes into the second half, defender Stephanie Catley fell and had to be attended by the medical team. A minute later, she stepped out of the field and had to be substitute by Jasmyne Spencer. “Nothing serious she has a little knee issue, but it is not major…” said Orlando Pride head coach, Tom Sermanni, about Catley’s injury. “It is not a strain or anything like that…” On minute 69, Thorns Amandine Henry received the ball at the verge of the box. The player, who came as a substituted nine minutes earlier, shot but the ball went very wide from Harris’ goal. The match registered a total of fourteen shots (two on target) for Orlando Pride and 51% of ball possession. Whereas, Portland Thorns FC shot five times (one on target) and had 49% of the ball possession. This was the first time in ten games that Orlando Pride does not score in a match. “Obviously we would like to be a field scoring team…but it comes a time that has to be balanced with pragmatism…” said Sermanni. Orlando Pride starting XI: [G] Ashlyn Harris (C); [D] Kristen Edmonds, Monica, Ali Krieger, Stephanie Catley; [M] Camila, Alanna Kennedy, Dani Weatherholt; [F] Chioma Ubogagu, Alex Morgan, Marta. Portland Thorns FC starting XI: [G] Adrianna Franch; [D] Katherine Reynolds, Emily Sonnett, Emily Menges, Meghan Klingenberg; [M] Lindsey Horan, Allie Long, Ashleigh Sykes, Nadia Nadim; [F] Christine Sinclair, Hayley Raso. Orlando Pride will play their last game of the regular season on September 30th, 2017 at the WakeMed Soccer Park against North Carolina Courage. Meanwhile, Portland Thorns FC will finish the season at their home stadium, Providence Park, on September 30th, 2017 against Chicago Red Stars. The match had a registered attendance of 7,353.

Ashlyn Harris earns shutout in return; Maddy Evans plays final pro match
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Pride (7-6-5, 26 points) offense was firing on all cylinders on Saturday night, as the Pride rolled to a 5-0 victory over Sky Blue FC (7-9-2, 23 points) at Orlando City Stadium. With the five goals, the Pride set a team record for most goals in a match as well as the Club’s record for most goals scored at Orlando City Stadium. With the win, the Pride jump above the playoff line, now sitting in fourth place in the league table with six games left to play. The match marked the final game for midfielder Maddy Evans, who entered the match in the 62nd minute to the roars of 5,243 fans in purple. “I was pleased with the performance tonight. I think it was a comprehensive win. I was really happy with how we played. We were really tight defensively, we kept possession better and more consistently than we had been. We can still do a little better, but I felt when we kept possession and broke their pressure, we looked really dangerous,” Head Coach Tom Sermanni said. “I think we had much better cohesion attacking wise, with Alex [Morgan] and Marta and Camila and Jasmyne [Spencer]. If we can keep tight defensively, I think we can create chances in games and score goals. The good thing today is we got ourselves in front. That’s so important.” After a weather delay of 1 hour and 15 minutes, Alex Morgan got the scoring started just four minutes into the match, netting the fastest goal in Orlando Pride history off a classy ball from Marta. After scoring off a pass from Morgan in Tuesday’s match, Marta returned the favor with a well-placed ball to Morgan in stride before the forward took a nifty touch around Christie Pearce for her fourth goal of the season. Morgan would earn a brace two minutes into the second half, after Jasmyne Spencer sent a pass through two defenders, springing Morgan for an uncontested shot on Sky Blue goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. Morgan’s two goals bookended midfielder Dani Weatherholt’s first professional goal, as the Santa Clara product made the match 2-0 in favor of the home team in the 43rd minute. Weatherholt was found alone in the box by Camila, who picked up her fifth assist of the season. Weatherholt’s goal was the 50th goal scored in Orlando Pride history. Marta scored the game’s final two goals, picking up a her third brace of the season in a span of five minutes. In the 53rd minute, Marta capitalized on a misplay by Sheridan, waiting to head the ball in at the goal line after a bobble by the goalkeeper. The Brazilian celebrated by running to the sideline to celebrate with Evans, who later made her final appearance in purple. Morgan and Marta teamed up once more to end the night, with Morgan picking out Marta on a long outlet pass, sending her on a breakaway. The forward made no mistake, putting in her 11th goal of the season, which moved her into a tie for second place in the NWSL’s Golden Boot race. The Pride defense held Sky Blue, and explosive striker Sam Kerr, quiet all night en route to the team’s third shutout and second in as many matches. Harris finished with three saves in her first game since May 21, including big saves in both the 68th and 70th minute. Saturday’s win closes out a three-match week for the Pride, picking up seven total points and going unbeaten over the homestand. Orlando drew Chicago 1-1 on Aug. 5 and defeated Washington 3-0 on Tuesday. The Pride will hit the road for their next two matches, first traveling to face the Boston Breakers at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, before featuring on Lifetime on Aug. 26 at FC Kansas City. Orlando returns home on Sept. 2, starting another three-match home swing against the Breakers at 7:30 p.m. ET. Written By: Brian Pohl Orlando, FL- The Orlando Pride took on the Washington Spirit Tuesday, August 8th, as the Pride looked for a quick turn-around after their 1-1 draw against Chicago on Saturday. A rematch of the Pride’s first ever match inside Orlando City Stadium; the Pride looked to win their first game over the Spirit, who has an all-time record of 0-2-2 against Washington. From the first touch, the Pride were looking to be aggressive, getting 10 shots off in the first half of play. However, only 2 of those shots were on target, as they were unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities in the first half. Forward Marta led the team with 6 first half shots (which put her within 1 shot of tying the clubs single game shots record) but was unable to connect as the Pride were unable to score in the first half. Defensively, the Pride were able to keep the Spirit in check, holding them to only 4 shots, and 0 on target. The only real fault in the first half was a Yellow card on Maddy Evans in the 45th minute, which stopped a threat by the Spirit heading into the half tied 0-0 of an otherwise clean half for the Pride. The second half was completely dominated by the Pride. The 0-0 tie was broken after Marta was able to break through the defense on an assist by Alex Morgan. Marta was able to keep enough control to tap the ball in just before going out of bounds in the 51st minute. From here on out the game was all Pride, as the Orlando squad was able to secure 2 more goals in the half. The next goal came in the 57th minute, as Camila Pereira scored on a long goal after Spirit’s goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe was caught out of position after a header. The final goal came in the 65th minute, a long pass from Steph Catley opened up Alex Morgan for a strike into the top of the net, making the score 3-0. The goal marked Alex Morgan’s third straight home game with a goal, which will be needed by the Pride to continue into a playoff push. Marta was able to gain sole possession of the club’s single game shot record with her 8th shot in the 68th minute. Defensively the Pride completely shut down the Spirit, holding them to 8 total shots for the whole match, with none of the shots on target. This made for a pretty uneventful day for goal keeper Aubrey Bledsoe, who watched as her defense stalled any potential threats that came from the Spirit. This was not a flawless game for the Pride though, as they committed two yellow cards, the second of which came in the 62nd minute by Chioma Ubogagu for not retreating after play had stalled. The Pride also committed 7 offside penalties, which was one short of the club record of most offsides in one match. Overall, this was an extremely impressive performance by the Pride after a quick turn-around from their match on Saturday. The first-half was without a goal, but was fast paced, with tons of shots coming from the Orlando squad and an impressive defense to take the 0-0 tie into the half. The second half was total control by Orlando, scoring three goals in approximately 12 minutes of game time to take full control of the match on offense. The Pride also won the possession duel of the match, holding possession for 50.8% of the match. This victory brings Orlando their first win over the Washington squad, bringing their overall record against the Spirit to 1-2-2. The Pride, who entered the match in 6th place in the standings, brought their overall record for the season to 6-6-5, earning themselves 3 points. These 3 points put the Pride in a tie for 5th place in the standings, and set up what is almost a must-win matchup against who they share the 5th place spot with, Sky Blue FC. This matchup will take place on Saturday, August 12, back in the Orlando City Stadium, where the Pride will be looking to continue to build upon the momentum they have created. |
