TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Men’s Golf senior Cristobal Del Solar ended his run at the U.S. Amateur Championship with a match-play defeat in the round of 32 to Thailand’s KK Limbhasut on Thursday morning at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Playing at the famous course that has hosted six U.S. Opens and three PGA Championships, Del Solar was able to reach four rounds of quality golf before bowing out at the tournament. The native of Chile got off to a tremendous start at the championship with a 4-under 66, producing six birdies in his opening round.
Del Solar returned on Tuesday to shoot a 4-over 74 and finish his stroke play portion of the tournament at even-par. The even-score tied him for 30th and put him before the 2-over cut line to advance to Wednesday’s match play portion.
Del Solar faced Duke senior Matt Oshrine in the round of 64 and won 4 and 2, sitting four holes ahead with two holes unfinished. The match was all square through the first seven holes, but Del Solar won two of the next three holes to go 2 up, followed by a birdie on the par-3 13th hole that put him three ahead.
A par finish on the par-4 16 combined with Oshrine’s bogey won the match for Del Solar. On Thursday he would eventually fall to Limbhasut and exit the championship.
Del Solar is playing the best golf of his amateur career, being named to the All-ACC Team and the Division I PING All-Southeast Region Team last year. He set new career lows for average score (71.70), average vs. par (0.61), rounds in the 60s (7) and par or less rounds (17).
In the 2015-16 year, he stayed in contention in several tournaments. Del Solar finished in the Top 16 in seven of his 11 events played. He also routinely got off to strong starts, with his 70.27 first-round scoring average ranking 15th nationally.
Del Solar qualified for the U.S. Amateur after coming in first at the Panthers Lake Course sectional in Winter Garden, Fla. He shot a two-day score of 134 on July 18 and 19.
