The Seminoles shoot 2-under in Sunday’s third round, good enough for 12th place and a shot at match play
(Sugar Grove, Ill.) – The Florida State Men’s Golf team executed in critical moments on Sunday afternoon, and as a result the Seminoles have an opportunity to play for a match-play spot on Monday at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Florida State is in 12th place in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships, holding a 4-under overall score which included a 2-under showing in Sunday’s third round. The Seminoles assured themselves a Top 15 spot needed to advance to Monday’s final stroke-play round. The top eight finishers in Monday’s round will advance to the match play quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Monday’s round will include pre-game coverage by the Golf Channel from 4-5 p.m. ET, followed by live coverage from 5-8 p.m. There will also be post-game coverage from 8-9 p.m.
“I thought we had a consistent day,” FSU head coach Trey Jones said. “We could tell at breakfast this morning that this was going to be a day where we had to get the ball close. We had a lot of pars, maybe a little too many, but all five guys gave us a good score today.”
Florida State’s Monday tee time has not been announced yet.
Sunday’s third round featured a clutch performance from redshirt senior Cristobal Del Solar, who shot a 2-under 70 and boasts a 5-under score that is tied for 17th. Once again, the Chile native limited his mistakes with just one bogey and capitalized with three birdies.
Redshirt junior Harry Ellis continues to lead the Seminoles overall with a 6-under score, shooting an even-par 72 on Sunday. The England native totaled three birdies and three bogeys in his third round, and with the season riding on the line his even-par score did no harm to the Seminoles’ pursuit of a Top 15 spot. Ellis is currently tied for 10th.
Senior Josh Lee saved his best round of the NCAA Championships at a crucial time, shooting an even-par 72 which included two birdies and two bogeys. The senior leader posted a big birdie on his second-to-last hole, a par-4 eighth hole that is 416 yards.
Lee’s big birdie on the eighth started with a good drive down the middle of the fairway, leaving him 103 yards left to the pin. He used a sand wedge to help play to a downwind where he hit a 100-yard shot, resulting in a three-foot putt that he holed in.
Sophomore Corey Carlson has stepped up his game the entire NCAA postseason, and Sunday was no different. He also shot a 72 and is tied for 44th individually, shooting even for the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Bennett Baker shot a 3-over 75 in his third round.
“It comes down to this – last day of college golf and you have to be in it to win it,” Jones added. “Our team is looking forward to tomorrow. They’re confident and they believe in themselves. Our first team meeting out here, it was very evident they didn’t want a participation award.”
Florida State reaches the fourth round of stroke play for the second time in the last three years, also making it in 2015.
Since the current stroke and match-play format was implemented in 2009, Florida State has made it to the quarterfinals once. That included a trip to the match-play semifinals in 2010.
