Los Angeles, CA - The University of Southern California came out the tunnel Saturday afternoon eager to dominate the game. The Trojans took the lead early and relentlessly held on to it while beating the Beavers down. The final score after four quarters was 38 to 10 with USC in the win column. It was a warmer day than it has been this past week and that was nothing to the Trojans as they blast past Oregon State. Although Oregon State lost they had some pretty good plays due to USC mistakes that they took advantage of.
The first quarter was all USC defense as they were able to stop almost every drive Oregon State had. The Trojans first drive resulted in a touchdown after starting on their own 22nd yard line. Sam Darnold connected with Tyler Vaughns for 37 yards and a touchdown to end their opening drive. Oregon State tried their best to get through the tough USC defense but Darell Garretson threw an interception. Jack Jones of the Trojans was the recipient of the interception that led to a Ronald Jones rushing touchdown. The Beavers got another chance to put some points up on the board but thanks to the Jones with a beautiful block on fourth down giving the men of Troy a big stop and the ball back. With the next possession for the Trojans Darnold lost control of the ball and in a rare moment fumbled the ball, turning it over to the Beavers. Oregon State took advantage of this big break but fell short of breaking the pylons. However, the Beavers were still able to set up the kicking unit and attempt a 37-yard field goal. Unfortunately for Oregon State, Jordan Choukair the Beavers place kicker shanked the attempt missing it wide left.
In the second quarter the Oregon State defense came to life stopping the Trojans advances as much as possible. Luckily for the Beavers they were able to stop USC from extending the lead during the second quarter. Although Oregon State was able to stop the USC defense and get in the red zone. The Beavers were able to set up another field goal attempt after being stopped just shy of the end zone. It was Choukair’s time to split the uprights putting the first points up on the board for the Beavers. Darnold and the USC offense were given another chance to put more points on the board and they did just that. After a great drive Darnold connected with Deontay Burnett for another touchdown putting the Trojans up 21 to 3 after the extra point was made. After the last touchdown from USC the Beavers defense kicked it up a bit and was able to stop them from scoring again in the quarter. The Oregon State Beavers, however also fell short from getting in the end zone once again.
Oregon State received in the second half and their first drive resulted in one first down and a three and out. After punting it away to the Trojans Darnold and the explosive USC offense came out strong, moving the ball all the way down to the Beavers 30 yard line. Darnold connected with Josh Falo, for Falos first reception of the season as well as his first touchdown. The next Oregon State possession seemed to be a solid series of downs until quarterback Garretson fumbled the ball on the USC 4 yard line, turning the ball over to the Trojans. USC, in a way squandered the opportunity of the fumble recovery by not getting in to a scoring position. Although the Trojans missed another chance the defense was still as tight as ever, until the goal line that is.
The Beavers had a great drive after stopping the Trojan offense. They finally were able to get in the end zone thanks to the rushing efforts of Artavis Pierce. With the next USC possession they drove it down to the red zone but the Beavers defense were able to force the field goal putting USC to 31. Darnold in the fourth quarter he threw a difficult pass that ended up getting intercepted. Thanks to the USC defense they were able to stop the drive and get possession back in the last minutes of the game. At this point Darnold was benched and back up quarterback Matt Fink took control under helm. He was able to move the ball down the field until he saw the perfect opportunity to put a 51-yard run for a touchdown in the books. With that run Fink put the Trojans up 38-10 and confirmed the USC win with out any doubt. For the extra kick the Trojans brought out Jake Olsen know as a blind long snapper. The whole crowd went crazy due to this fact and his snap couldn't have been better.
The Trojans took control of this game early on and would not let the Beavers have any chance to take the lead. The Beaver fought valiantly but clearly were out played. The Oregon State running back Pierce should have more attention, as he was a freight train coming down the field. Although it was not enough the Oregon State team can use some work but it is clear that they are on their way back up to being a strong PAC-12 team. The next USC game is against Utah and luckily it will be at home, which should with a win put USC as number one in the PAC-12 South division.
