(Los Angeles, CA) The University of California, Los Angeles football team wrapped up their spring training with their annual spring football game. Both the Blue team and the White team gave great performances on either side of the ball. To the untrained eye, you would think a 17 to 10 win would mean bad offense, but that was not the case. The UCLA defense was so stingy on both teams that the offense had to get a bit creative to put points on the board.
The Blue team had star quarterback Josh Rosen on that side, and he proved again and again why he is their star quarterback. Although Rosen was giving an excellent performance on his side of the ball, it was what the White team’s defense was doing. The White team’s defense was so impressive that they forced Rosen into a few bad throws. In the first quarter, the White team’s offense had a great couple of drive and was able to rush the ball across the pylons to put the first points of the game up. It did not take long for the Blue team to get the ball back and move the chains. They were able to keep pushing and made some great 3rd down plays. The Blue team did end up tying the game before halftime.
Both teams came out of halftime ready to play. The White team’s defense had some amazing hits and stops, which put Rosen in some sticky situations. Rosen, being the great quarterback he is, did not let that get in his way and powered through. They ended up not being able to make it to the end zone and had to kick it away. The White team was able to make it happen and took the lead and the eventual win.
The biggest takeaway for me from this game was what happen during half time. UCLA had a walk-on player that plays for their special teams and they awarded him with a scholarship. The whole team gathered around him and congratulated him. It was a great way to show your student athletes and future athletes that UCLA does care.
Overall the UCLA offense could use some work, but the defense is something to fear. The rest of the Pac-12 needs not to underestimate the UCLA Bruins. I see a great season and post season coming for UCLA.
