Orlando, FL- Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led the Huskies with 23 points, while Breanna Stewart added 17 points and 4 boards as UCONN dominated UCF from the very beginning on their way to a 100-45 victory.
Stewart opened up the scoring with a layup in the first minute as UCONN took a 2-0 lead. Aliyah Gregory and the Knights answered right back with a bucket of their own to tie up the game and from that point, things got out of hand.
The Huskies went on a 16-2 scoring run in the next 3 minutes and 5 seconds to make it 18-4. After a bucket and two free throws for the Knights made it 25-8 with 13:40 on the clock, they were shut down for the rest of the 1st half.
The Huskies added a 14-0 run and a 12-0 run quickly to pull well out of UCF’s reach as the half drew near.
UCF guard Zykira Lewis led the Knights in first half scoring with 7, while on the other side it was Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis leading the pack for the Huskies with 15 points and shooting 3 for 4 from behind the arc. Our score at the half was 61-18, in a matchup where the Knights were truly out played as they shot just 21% from the field in the first half.
UCONN opened up the 2nd half with 2 quick baskets and a 3 pointer to make it 71-18 with 18:19 left on the clock. Along with 62 total points in the paint, the Huskies cruised the rest of the way to the finish line with a 100-45 victory over the Knights.
Lewis led the Knights in scoring with 15 points, while Stephanie Taylor led UCF with 8 boards, 7 coming on the offensive end.
The Knights will have to recover quickly from their fifth straight loss as they head to Dallas, Texas to take on an SMU team that was beat by UConn 87-28 two weeks ago, this Sunday with a 2pm EST scheduled tipoff.
For the Huskies it’s about staying focused and keeping their eyes on the prize on the road to Tampa. Though UConn beat the Knights by 55, for coach Geno Auriemma and his Huskies, blowouts like these can cause difficult decisions to be made that affect how the games feel for his players.
"We’re not really worried about what the score is. I just want to make sure they don’t develop bad habits, that they don’t get sloppy with the way we want to execute, the way we want to play.” Said Auriemma when I asked him post game about the difficulty that comes with keeping a team focused in games that aren’t close on the scoreboard.
“The hard part is trying to figure out how to get our starters enough minutes. I think K. played 15 minutes in the first half. So now if you don’t play her in the second half, it’s not really a game, it’s not really even a practice, its nothing.”
“So the hard part is trying to figure out how long do we leave them in there and how much time do we really need. Its not good, its not good.”
The two time Defending National Champions will now head to Cincinnati, Ohio to face the lady Bearcats Sunday Jan. 25th with a 3pm EST scheduled tipoff, as they look to extend their 16 game winning streak.
