Seattle, WA- Entering Thursday, the Seattle Sounders were facing a 2-1 deficit to Santa Tecla FC in the CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16 series. They looked to turn things around at CenturyLink Field and advance to the CCL quarterfinals. Before the match up, Sounders head coach Brian Schmeter tweeted "We have to make them feel our crowd." , and they did just that.
Early on in the match we saw a very physical play from both sides. Just three minutes in, Santa Tecla FC midfielder, Fernando Quintanilla, received a yellow card. Then in the fourteenth minute of the game Santa Tecla defender Marion Comejo received the team’s second yellow card of the match. The Sounders had five good shots on goal but couldn’t connect in the first half, while Santa Tecla had only one shot on goal that couldn’t. Santa Tecla committed a total of twelve fouls, while the Sounders only committed four in the first forty-five minutes of the match. Just before the end on the first half Sounders Midfielder Gustav Svensson shot on goal was on target but missed just short of the goal as Santa Techla goalie Joel Almeida gathered the ball.
However, the Sounders weren’t done bringing the heat, as they came out in the 2nd half just as physical levying a arsenal of shots. The heat for the Sounders started in the sixty-ninth minute of the match midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro scored on a header for Seattle Sounders. Then in the eighty-first minute Sounders defender Chad Marshall scored. Just minutes later Magnus Eikrem in his Sounders debut, notched a goal in the eighty-fourth minute. With a total of four goals to nil the Sounders would clinch their 4th CCL quarterfinals berth in 5 Champion League appearances. Only once have they made it to the Semi-Finals, back in the 2012-13 tourney.
No team from the MLS has ever won the Champion League Crown. Only Real Salt Lake and Montreal Impact have made it to the finals, both suffering defeat.
Next up for the Sounders they open up MLS play at home against the Los Angeles Football Club on Sunday. Which can be seen on ESPN, YouTubeTV or listened to on the official radio station of the Seattle Sounders 950 KJR AM. Than its back to Champions League play as the Sounders will host Chivas in Leg 1 of the CCL quarterfinals next Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. PST.
