PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer team pushed No. 4 Maryland to double overtime on Tuesday night at Yurcak Field with the Terps netting the golden goal with six minutes remaining in the game.
After Maryland went ahead 1-0 early in the game off a penalty kick by Gordon Wild, the Scarlet Knights' Dante Perez blasted in the equalizer in the 27th minute.
The Terps' Jake Rozhansky, however, captured the golden goal in the 104th minute taking a rebound right in front of the goal line off a saved shot from Sebastian Elney.
Maryland improved to 4-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights, meanwhile, drop to 0-5-0 and 0-2-0 in Big Ten play.
Rutgers make its comeback from down 1-0 as Ryan Peterson took a corner kick for Rutgers that was batted out by the Terp defense. However, Perez swooped in at the top of the 18 to take the clear and find the back of the Maryland net for RU's first goal of the year.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 after regulation after the Rutgers defense stopped six attempts on net in the second half. In addition to senior goalkeeper David Greczek making four of his eight stops in the second frame, Ross Tetro and Tyler Morris also came away with stops at the goal line to keep the contest tied midway through the half.
With the clock ticking down in regulation, Tim McQuaid played a throw-in to Rayon Gibbs along the left side. Gibbs played the ball into Jason Wright at the penalty mark, but a foul was called negating the potential Scarlet Knight game-winner and the upset.
In the second overtime, Greczek made a point blank save on a shot by Sebastain Elney, but Terp teammate Rozhansky collected the rebound and put the ball high into the net to prevent the Scarlet Knight upset.
The Rutgers men's soccer team returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 at Ohio State. Kick off is set for 2 p.m.
