“I thought Brandon was really good early and kind of took it upon himself to maybe to do much late and was expecting other things to happen besides the finish. “ said Broncos Head Coach Kerry Keating of Clark’s performance. “He went in there almost trying to create controversy to much, in terms of concentration on a finish or the extra pass and it just came up empty.”
The Broncos opened the second half flat going scoreless in the first 9 minutes of the game when Brownridge ended the drought with a layup. By that time the Vols had gone on a 14-2 run to take a 41-32 lead with 10:23 left in the 2nd period.
However Santa Clara would not back down as they went on a quick 6-2 run to draw within 7, as 2 free throws from Matt Hubbard made it 43-36 Vols with 9:24 to play.
Tennessee continued to stretch their lead with as much as a 11 point 53-42 lead on the Broncos with 5:07 to play. Santa Clara continued to fight as they cut the lead to 4 with 38.8 to play with the score 59-55.
But the Vols size and physical defense would be the difference down the stretch. Tennessee outrebounded the Broncos 34-25 and had 32 points in the paint compared to the Broncos 14.
Tennessee will play the winner of Kansas vs Rhode Island, whom play in the 2nd game of the Orlando Classic.
