No. 20 Michigan State defeated the Rider Broncs 77-45 at HP Field House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. This was both teams first game of the Orlando Classic Tournament.
The Spartans pulled ahead early in the matchup, igniting a 10-1 run led by Freshman Marvin Clark’s two three pointers. MSU did a great job of moving the ball, which led to a 21 point lead over the Broncs late in the first half.
The Spartans backcourt of Senior Travis Trice and Junior Bryn Forbes led the team in scoring at the half, combining for 15 of the team’s 32 points.
In the second half MSU nearly scored their whole first half total in the first 10 minutes. Junior Denzel Valentine scored two three pointers at the start of the half to help grow the Spartan’s lead. Valentine would go on to score 19 points in the game with 5 three pointers total in the half.
I put a lot of emphasis on getting him (Valentine) going, he has to play better offensively if we’re going to be a great team. He’s my most versatile player, I think there’s a million things he does well…” said MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo.
The Broncs had trouble finding the basket all night. They made 16 of their 62 shots and made 1 of 13 behind the arc. Rider center Matt Lopez led the team with 14 points.
The Spartans will play the winner of the matchup between Georgia Tech and Marquette on Friday. Rider will play the loser on Friday.
