It was a valiant effort, but Louisville (5-4, 2-4 ACC) couldn't cap off the comeback falling to Wake Forest 42-32. The Cardinals have lost three out of their last four games. At the beginning of the year there were high hopes but now finishing the season strong is the primary focus.
Lamar Jackson did everything he could to pull out the victory. He was 27 for 44 for 330 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jackson was dynamic as usual on the ground carrying 27 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns. To put things in perspective, Louisville had 523 yards of total offense. Jackson was responsible for 491. The Cardinals have reached at least 400 yards of offense in 19 of the last 22 games.
Wake Forest (5-3, 2-3 ACC) was led by strong play from their quarterback John Wolford. Wolford was 28 for 34 for 461 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. “It’s a great feeling anytime you can get a win, and an ACC win especially is a big deal. We’re celebrating that, guys are ecstatic. We were finally able to finish a game off right. It’s a big step for us. We’re gonna celebrate for 24 hours; then we have a tough challenge next week,” Wolford said.
The Demon Deacons scored on their first possession of the game, going 10 plays for 91 yards. The drive was capped off when Wolford scored on a one-yard run. After a 35-yard field goal, Louisville cut the lead to 7-3. Wake Forest then answered with 14 unanswered points before Jackson scored on a seven-yard run to bring the score to 21-10.
“We just wanted to come out and make plays, put points on the board. It was important to keep catching them off guard to keep us going with the tempo,” Wake Forest redshirt sophomore wide receiver Scotty Washington said.
Wake Forest was up 35-10 before Jackson led the Cardinals to 22 unanswered points before an onside kick failed and set up Wake Forest with excellent field position late in the fourth quarter.
“You feel pressure to score anytime you touch the ball. I think if we would have scored a touchdown at the end of the second quarter, we would have gone into halftime with a manageable deficit. Everything matters. Every opportunity, you must take advantage of,” Louisville Head Coach Bobby Petrino said.
Wolford connected with Chuck Wade for a 44-yard score that would prove to be too much for the Cardinals.
Matt Colburn paced the Demon Deacons on the ground carrying 24 times for 134 yards. Freshman wide receiver Greg Dortch had a huge day with 10 receptions for 167 yards and four touchdowns. Washington had six receptions for 133 yards.
Despite the eye-catching numbers by Jackson, Wake Forest sacked him seven times and had 11 tackles for a loss.
