HOUSTON – When the State of Texas is need, Texans answer the call. That’s never been more true than now with the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey across the Texas Gulf Coast and catastrophic flooding in the Houston area.
With the Houston Football team evacuated to Austin, a call has been put out to the nine FBS teams in the state of Texas who are at home for the opening weekend of college football season and may have equipment trucks available.
Trucks and drivers from those schools who are able to participate will be staging in north Austin at 1212 E. Anderson Lane, Austin, TX 78752 (between Luby’s and Wal-Mart) and south Austin at Travis Roofing Supply Building (5010 Burleson Rd., Austin, TX 78744) on Thursday from 1-5 p.m. where student-athletes from the Houston Football program will collect items and load them into the trucks for a Friday morning convoy to Houston.
Items needed for the collection are as follows:
Non-Perishable Food: PULL TOP canned vegetables, fruits etc.; ready to eat dry goods such as nuts, peanut butter, dried fruits, granola and trail mixes, jerky, ready to eat snacks; bottled water; ready- to-eat meals or MREs etc.
Personal Care Products: Antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, lotion etc.
Cleaning supplies: Laundry detergents, general cleaner, sponges, bleach (powdered form is preferred), mops, scrub brushes, buckets, rubber gloves etc.
Paper products: Toilet paper, paper towels etc.
Baby and infant supplies: Diapers, wipes, diaper rash ointment, baby wash, baby shampoo, baby lotion, formula, etc.
First-Aid items: Bandages, gauze, pads, first aid tape, antiseptic creams, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, latex gloves, instant cold packs etc.
Blankets, towels, pillows, underwear, new or gently used clothing, etc.
For those wanting to help and can’t make it to a collection point, you are encouraged to support the rescue and recovery efforts through charities on the ground including the Red Cross. The international network is on the ground in Houston providing emergency relief. To donate to the Red Cross, please click here.
The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund will accept tax deductible flood relief donations. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
