TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Historic Tully Gymnasium will serve as the site for an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 15 showdown for the fifth time in its history when 13th-ranked Florida State hosts seventh-ranked Florida at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in a Sunshine Showdown, presented by Fresh From Florida.
Wednesday marks the eighth straight match in the series that both Florida State and Florida have been ranked in the AVCA Top 25. While the Gators won the last two meetings, both in Gainesville last season, the two programs have split the 28 matches played at Tully Gym.
“Tully Gym is a great atmosphere for a volleyball match,” said Florida State head coach Chris Poole. “It is a treat for our fans to see two top 15 programs going head-to-head on the court. I look forward to the Seminole nation and our fans being out in full force tomorrownight from the opening tip.”
The Seminoles (6-1) are looking to extend their current winning streak to four matches after posting recent victories over Baylor, Florida A&M and Little Rock as they captured the Tallahassee Seminole Tournament title.
Florida State is also in search of its third straight home win against the Gators, which would be the first three-match home winning streak by the Seminoles since a pair of 2-0 wins on Nov. 4, 1975 and a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 9, 1984.
Florida (6-1) enters the contest riding a five-match winning streak after losing its season opener in four sets to No. 1 Nebraska. The Gators most recent victories came via sweeps at the Blackbird Invitational in Brooklyn, N.Y., where they faced Denver and LIU Brooklyn. The back-to-back 3-0 wins mark the fifth by virtue of a sweep this season for Florida.
