Hartford, CT - On a cold, snowy afternoon here at the XL Center, in the second game of the second day of the 2017 American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 80-61. It looked like the game would be close once it began, but soon after it was clear that Cincinnati was in total control.
At the end of the first half, Cincinnati led Tulsa by a score of 40-25. Early on, both teams came out playing fast and aggressive on both ends of the courts and Cincinnati continued that speed throughout the half. Tulsa, on the other hand, did as well but had some moments where they did not execute properly. One of the biggest reasons behind Cincinnati’s success, was their shot making. They made 45% of their shots from the field while in comparison, Tulsa only made 39% of their shots.
Cincinnati was led by guard Jacob Evans, who led all scorers with 11 points. Fellow guard Troy Caupain led both teams in rebounding with five boards. Tulsa was led by guard Corey Henderson Jr. who led the team in scoring with eight points.
In the second half, it was more of the same. Cincinnati continued to make shots while executing a stifling defense. Whenever Tulsa got into the paint, Cincinnati seemed to get in and clog the lanes and make it difficult for Tulsa to score. This problem was exasperated by the fact that Tulsa continued to struggle in making shots. In the second half, Tulsa shot 45% from the field while Cincinnati, in comparison, made 53% of their shots from the field.
Cincinnati was led by forward Kyle Washington, who led all scorers with 21 points. He also led the team in rebounds with six. Cincinnati had two other players score in double figures as well. Evans scored 20 points and Caupain added 15 points.
Tulsa was led by Henderson, who led the team in scoring with 15 points. Guard Sterling Taplin added 10 points. Outside of their shooting, one major problem for Tulsa was turnovers. They had 14 turnovers compared to the seven that Cincinnati had in the game.
Cincinnati will face off against the winner of the University of Connecticut Huskies and Houston Cougars. Cincinnati’s next game will be on Saturday at 5PM EST here at the XL Center. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
