NO LIMITS, TX -- In a 2nd straight weather shorted qualifying session in as many days, Ryan Blaney would capture the Pole after just 1 round of qualifying at Texas Motor Speedway.
Here's how a wild qualifying session for the My Bariatric Solutions 300 went down in the fastest town in Texas.
Qualifying got started at Texas Motor Speedway with nearly 20 cars still in the inspection line. However, shortly after the green flag flew to start round 1, moisture on the track would bring out the red flag with 11:51 left on the round 1 clock. This would allow for a few more cars to make it through tech and make a qualifying lap.
After just 14 cars made qualifying lap times, the red flag would fly again with 5:17 left on the round 1 clock. At this point, the leading lap time was Ryan Truex in the No. 11 with a lap time of 28.524 seconds. 2nd was Austin Cindric in the No. 12 with a lap time of 29.004 seconds.
After getting back under green, a third red flag would fly as Mike Harmon in the No. 74 spun out on the backstretch with just 2:32 left on the round 1 clock.
As round 1 of qualifying an to an end, Ryan Blaney in the No. 22 posted the fastest time with a 28.439 -second lap. Qualifying 25th and missing the round 1 cut was Stephen Leicht.
Notable drivers unable to get through tech and missing the chance to make a qualifying lap included Matt Tift, Kevin Harvick, and Xfinity series points, leader Elliott Sadler.
Shortly after the completion of round 1, NASCAR and track officials would call qualifying due to the weather. This would give the pole award to Blaney.
"That's definitely the strangest pole we have ever won. But hopefully everything clears up, and we can get running," said Blaney of winning the pole.
Rounding out the top five were Ryan Truex in 2nd, Brandon Jones in 3rd, Ryan Reed in 4th and Namie McMurray in 5th.
The green flag for the My Bariatric Solutions 300 is scheduled to drop at 3:00 pm ET from Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon.
