The inaugural SkyBoat awards have concluded and the winner of the Defensive Player of the Year Award is senior defensive end Bradley Chubb of the NC State Wolfpack. With only the Hyundai Sun Bowl left to play Chubb has 73 tackles (40 solo) with three forced fumbles and 10 sacks. He also has 26 tackles for a loss for a total of -106. Chubb also has a blocked kick.
Chubb's 10 sacks lead the ACC and is tied for 9th in the nation. He is the Wolfpacks all-time in sacks (26) and tackles for-loss (60). His 26 career sacks places him fifth on the ACC all-time list. Chubb helped the Wolfpack defense to be 52nd in total defense in the FBS giving up 377.2 yards a game. In the ACC, NC State is tied for 5th in total defense.
Chubb's best game stat wise this year was on the road against Boston College back on November 11th. The Wolfpack came away with a 17-14 win. Chubb had nine tackles (6 solo, 5 for a loss), 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Boston College only had 111 passing yards in the game and also threw an interception.
Chubb had a good game against Louisville back in October. He was tasked in slowing down reigning Heisman Trophy winner and a finalist for this year's Heisman Lamar Jackson. Chubb and his teammates responded with a 39-25 victory. Chubb had six tackles (2 solo) and a sack. Jackson put up his numbers but was also sacked four times.
Against reigning National Champion, Clemson, who has a chance to defend this year, NC State narrowly lost at home 38-31. Chubb did his part with eight tackles (3 solo) and 1.5 tackles for a loss. He also pressured the quarterback twice in the game.
Even against Pitt, in which he had a quiet game stats wise with only two tackles, Chubb still managed to pressure the QB twice. The Wolfpack also came away with the victory in that game 35-17. Chubb was consistent throughout the year. Two of his multiple sack games were on the road.
Chubb registered eight tackles in three games this year. Only the Pitt game did he not have a tackle for a loss. NC State (8-4, 6-2 ACC) will take on Arizona State (7-5, 6-3 PAC-12) on CBS December 29th at 2:00 PM CST in Chubb's last game at NC State.
