Two Wildcat teams will face off in collegiate football for the first time in 89 years.
The University of Kentucky Wildcats (7-5) will take on Northwestern University (9-3) in the 2017 Franklin American Mortgage Company Music City Bowl.
Northwestern beat Kentucky 7-0 in the matchup between the two schools in 1928.
Kentucky is bowling for the third year in a row after missing the postseason between 2011 and 2015.
This is the 14th bowl appearance for Northwestern University, and 17th for Kentucky.
Kentucky has netted a record of 8-8 in the 16 bowl game attempts. Meanwhile Northwestern has only won 3 times in their 14 games.
Kentucky’s coach, Mark Stoops, knows that the game against Northwestern won’t be an easy one.
“Kentucky has a long history with this game,” Stoops said in a release, adding that “ fans love going to Nashville. Taking on Northwestern will be a great challenge and we look forward to an exciting game.”
Stoops also earned a one-year contract extension after leading Kentucky to seven wins in 2017.
Northwestern can be considered one of the hottest football teams in the country, and the team is excited about what could be a 10 win season.
“There’s a lot at stake,” Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald said in a release. “It’s an opportunity to send our seniors out right and win 10 games.”
After starting the 2017 campaign with back-to-back losses against Penn State and Wisconsin, the Wildcats rallied off seven consecutive wins to end the 2017 regular season, including three straight wins in overtime.
The Wildcats of Northwestern haven’t been defeated since the loss to Penn State on Oct. 7.
Kentucky, on the other hand, enters the Music City Bowl with back-to-back blowout losses to Louisville and Georgia.
ESPN will televise the 2017 Franklin American Mortgage Company Music City Bowl at 4:00 PM E.T on Friday, December 29.
