The Appalachian State Mountaineers (9-4) dominated the Toledo Rockets (11-3) 34-0 in the Dollar General Bowl. For the Mountaineers, this is their third straight bowl game victory since they joined the FBS in 2015. The first year they were ineligible due to switching from the FCS. "Our seniors have been through a lot. We transitioned into the FBS back in 2013," Appalachian State Head Coach Scott Satterfield said.
The Mountaineers ran all over Toledo's defense including four touchdowns on 53 carries for 327 yards. Jalin Moore led the way for the Mountaineers with 22 carries for 125 yards and a career-best three touchdowns. Moore scored on a pair of 7-yard runs and also a 31-yard run. Moore was named the Player of the Game. "I just tried to play a perfect game for myself and for my boys," Moore said.
Toledo only had 22 yards rushing and at the half just nine yards. Turnovers and penalties did Toledo in. Quarterback Logan Woodside threw three interceptions. Two of them were thrown into double coverage. Toledo also fumbled. The Rockets had five penalties for 35 yards, but every time they were moving the ball they committed a false start or holding call.
Appalachian State outgained Toledo 458 yards to 146 yards. Woodside finished the game 16 of 29 for 124 yards. He was also sacked four times. "To be able to get to a bowl game like this, the caliber of this bowl game to come out here and to play as well as we did tonight was unbelievable," Satterfield said.
Mountaineer QB Taylor Lamb was eight of 16 for 131 yards. He also ran eight times for 45 yards.
Defensive Lineman Caleb Fuller had four tackles (three for a loss) and 1.5 sacks. Linebacker Anthony Flory had eight tackles for the Mountaineers. "Our coaches get us real comfortable. It's really second nature," Flory said.
For the Rockets, defensive end Zach Quinn, defensive back Kahlil Robinson, and linebacker Jack Linch all had eight tackles.
This is the first time since 2009 (against Ohio State) that Toledo has been shut out in a game.
OFFSEASON: Both teams will need to find a new starter at quarterback. For the Rockets, they'll need to rebuild their offensive line as they're losing four starters. The Mountaineers return three of their main running backs next year.
