The Boston College football team will be headed to Detroit for Christmas. The Eagles will be representing the ACC in the Quick Lane Bowl on December 26th. Their opponent will be former ACC foe Maryland, who will be representing the Big 10.
Under head coach Steve Addazzio, the Eagles will be playing in their third bowl game in four years. It will be the Boston College’s 25th all-time, and the 15th in the last 18 seasons. But they haven’t won a bowl game since 2007.
Boston College (6-6, 2-6 ACC) will enter the contest as winners of their last two games. They beat UConn 30-0, and Wake Forest 17-14 to become bowl eligible. The Eagles also accumulated victories over UMass, Wagner, Buffalo, and N.C. State during the season. Four of the Eagles losses were to CFP ranked teams, Virginia Tech, semi-finalist Clemson, Louisville, and Florida State.
Maryland (6-6, 3-6 B1G), will travel to Detroit after going through the gauntlet that is the Big Ten East division. They started out hot with victories over Howard, FIU, UCF and Purdue, before losing six of their next eight contests. During that span they would beat Michigan State, and Rutgers. Three of their losses came to ranked teams Penn State, Michigan and semi-finalist Ohio State. The Terrapins will be looking for their first bowl win since 2010.
The Eagle’s players and coaches are thrilled to get a chance at win number seven against the familiar Terrapins.
“Couldn't be happier about our opportunity. Couldn't be happier about the chance to get to our seventh win and play in this bowl game and have a chance to be around our players and develop our team.” Addazzio, exclaimed after the announcement.
Senior captain Tyler Rouse echoed those sentiments, and what it means for the younger players.
“The team just feels so excited just to be back at (a bowl). And for the young guys who haven't been to one yet, it's really exciting for them.” Rouse would say.
For fellow senior captain and Maryland native John Johnson, it is extra special. “Maryland didn't really offer me. They didn't really recruit me that much. It means a lot to me.” Johnson said. He would add that it’s not personal but concluded with a final message for the Terrapins. “They'll get the best out of No. 9. That's all I can say.”
