Orlando, Fl - USA and Denmark battle it out for Gold in Wednesday’s finals at the 2016 Invictus Games at the HP Field House. There was a full house in attendance to watch the match between the two Nations, including special guests such as Prince Harry, VP Joe Biden and WWE Superstar John Cena.
The Americans and Danes went head to head in first period, with USA showing their powerhouse capability, compiling a 15 to 7 halftime lead.
In the second half, both teams had a balanced attack with the US maintaining their lead, but being unable to pull definitively pull away to capture gold. But the Danes were unable to gain enough momentum to draw even with the Americans.
In the end, USA won the Wheelchair Rugby match and claimed the Gold with a 28 to 19 victory. The final standing ‘s Wheelchair Rugby at the Invictus Games had the USA taking home the Gold, Denmark winning Silver and UK capturing the Bronze.
After the match, USA athlete Patrick Smith spoke highly of his teammates and the honor of having Vice President Joe Biden present them their Gold Medals. “It was a great opportunity, I had fun.”
Earlier through the match Smith’s his two little ones could be sitting next to John Cena, who was the coach in the JLR Wheelchair Rugby Celebrity game. They were visibly excited to see their father and team USA take home the Gold.
