Charleston, SC- Bryant Crawford’s 17 points and 6 assist’s in 32 minutes helped lead the way for the Wake forest Demon Deacons as they topped the College of Charleston 78-61 on day 3 of the Charleston Classic.
Wake Forest’s Bryant Crawford hit the first points of the game with a triple to make it 3-0 with 19 minutes left in the 1st half. 2 minutes later the college of Charleston finally got on the board with two free throws from Payton Hulsey to make it 3-2 Wake.
Jarrell Brantley would then give us our first lead change in the game with 15:50 left in the 1st half as he hit a layup to take the 7-6 lead over Wake. He would then hit two free throws to make it a 9-6 lead before wake went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-9 lead.
The Deacons pressure on the offensive side continued and with 4:49 left in the first half they had opened up a 7 point lead on the Cougars with a 26-19 lead, causing College of Charleston head coach Earl Grant to take a timeout and regroup. This only stopped the bleeding momentarily as Wake had extended their led to 9 points with 2:22 left in the half. By the end of the 1st half the Demon Deacons had jumped out to a comfortable 14-point lead.
Scoring leaders at the half were Jarrell Brantley for the College of Charleston with 9 points. Wake Forest’s leading scorer at the break was Austin Arians with 8 points.
As the 2nd half started, the Deacons started right where they left off with Dinos Mitoglou hitting a triple to extend their lead to 17 just 39 seconds into the half. The Cougars fought their way back in and went on a 8-2 run to cut it to an 11 point game with just 16:20 left in the half.
They continued to claw away and they were helped as Wake Forest picked up 9 team fouls in the first 6 minutes of the half. With 13:10 left in the half, Charleston had cut it to a 10-point deficit with Wake up 49-39.
Wake Forest woke up and went on an 11-3 run to take a 60-42 lead with 9:30 left to play. John Collins then went to the free throw line and hit two free throws to give Wake their biggest lead of the game at 20 points.
This still didn’t deter the Cougars as they fought back going on an 10-0 run to make it 62--52 with 6:20 left to play. Wake Forest went scoreless for the next 3 minutes and 50 seconds before Bryant Crawford hit a layup to extend their lead back 12 with just 4:58 left to play.
That was the start of a 12-1 run as Wake forest opened their biggest lead of the game at 21 points with 2:12 left in regulation. Charleston was unable to close the gap any after that. As the final buzzer sounded it was a Demon Deacons 78-61 victory.
