On a sunny, chilly afternoon here in Charleston, at TD Arena, in the second game, of the final day, of the Charleston Classic tournament, the Mississippi State University Bulldogs defeated the University of Texas El-Paso Miners, 61-54. It was a close, fast game right up until the final seconds. Both teams played fairly well but Mississippi State just made a few more shots than UTEP.
In the first half, it was a close, fast-paced affair. Both teams came out with a lot of energy and it was clear that both teams came ready to play. Early on, UTEP led by 11 points at one point but Mississippi State quickly came back to keep the game close. At the half, both teams were tied at 33.
Mississippi State forward Aric Holman led all scorers with 14 points in the first half. Guards Quinndary Weatherspoon and I.J. Ready also added six points apiece. Mississippi State played a pretty clean game the first half as they only had two turnovers.
UTEP was led by guard Omega Harris who had 10 points on 4 04 shooting. Center Matt Wilms also added six points. While Mississippi State didn’t struggle too much with turnovers, UTEP didn’t either as they only committed five at the half. Both teams also had 15 rebounds total.
In the second half, both teams missed a few more shots than they did in the first half. Mississippi State however, made a few more the UTEP. Mississippi State scored 28 points and UTEP scored 21. Holeman for Mississippi State led all scorers with 18 points. Guard Lamar Peters added 13 points and led the team in assists with four. They had a few more turnovers in the second half than they did the first half with six, bringing their total to eight. They still did a pretty good job with ball security.
UTEP was led by guard Dominic Artis who led the team in scoring with 15 points. He was also tied for the team lead in assists with three. Wilms finished the game with a double-double. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds, which led the team. UTEP also had pretty good ball security as they only had seven turnovers in the second half, bringing their game total to 12. The biggest problem they had was that late in the game, they did not convert on many of their shots. Some of it was in part to the Mississippi State defense, but there were few times where they had open looks but failed to convert them.
Mississippi State will return home, to Humphrey Coliseum, to face the Leigh University Mountain Hawks on Friday, November 25th at 8PM CST. UTEP will return home, to the Don Haskins Center, to the face the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions on Wednesday, November 23rd at 9PM MST.
