(June 17, 2016) - Colombia is the 2nd team to qualify to the Semifinals of the Copa America Centenario after defeating Peru 4-2 in the penalty shootout.
The "Cafeteros" reach their first semifinals in 15 years. The last time was in 2001 when they won the tournament. Colombia will face the winner of Mexico vs. Chile.
This was one of the closest games of the tournament with Colombia attacking with James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado and Peru with Paolo Guerrero up front creating many problems for both defenses.
Peru played the same way the play against Brazil, trying to desperate the opponent with defensive roughness and a touching game when they got the ball, but this time, it was not enough to get a goal.
On the penalty shootout, the Colombians were the first to shoot with James Rodriguez scoring the first penalty, followed by Sebastian Perez, Juan Cuadrado and Dayro Moreno scoring their respective penalties, with Colombian goalkeeper, David Ospina was going to decisive with a penalty save. Unluckily for Peru Christian Cueva was going to miss the crucial penalty that gave the Colombians the pass to the semifinal.
Colombia will play in Chicago next Wednesday, June 22, against Mexico or Chile for a place in the Copa America Final.
