Desi Rodriguez and Michael Nzei both had double-doubles to lead the Seton Hall Pirates to a 90-79 victory over Quinnipiac on day two of the 2016 Advocare Invitational. Despite the loss, the Bobcats kept it a game throughout and never letup, led by Peter Kiss, coming off the bench with 19 points in 31 minutes.
Quinnipiac started the scoring with a jumper from Abdulai Bundu after he got possession off of a steal. Then after a empty Seton Hall possession, it was Daniel Harris hitting a triple to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. Shortly after Seton Hall got their first basket of the game as Madison Jones hit a triple. However, then Harris hot another triple for Quinnipiac to give them an 8-3 lead.
After another failed Seton Hall empty possession it was Reggie Oliver getting in on the action with a triple of his own for Quinnipiac as they went up 8 points, just 2 minutes and 27 seconds into the game. The Bobcats continued to put their will on the Pirates and they had extended their lead to 20-10 with 14:18 left in the first half.
Then it seemed as if things started to click for the Pirates as they went on a 10-0 run to tie the game up at 20 with 10:34 left in the game. Seton Hall extended that run to a 16-2 run to go up 26-22 before the Bobcats got back in rhythm. It was again a tie game with 6:31 left in the half. After that, Seton Hall went on a 7-0 run to go up 35-28 as Michael Nzei connected on a layup. The Bobcats were able to limit the damage and went into the locker room trailing just 46-39.
Quinnipiac started the second half getting to the line as Phil Winston hit one of two to cut the Pirates lead to just 6 points. However, Seton Hall answered right back with a quick layup from Desi Rodriguez to push their lead back to 8. With 17:41 left in the game, Seton Hall had pulled out to an 11-point lead up 51-40.
This would be a trend over the next 7 minutes as Seton Hall’s lead shifted between 11, 8 and 15 points, which the were up by with 12:45 left to play. However that 62-47 lead didn’t hold strong long as the bobcats fought back going on a 13-0 run to cut it to a 2 point game with 9:54 left to play.
Seton Hall stretched the floor and extended their lead back to 11 with just 3:52 left in the game. The last 4 minutes sw Quinnipiac doing what they could to come back in the game, but it was to no avail as they suffered a 90-79 defeat to the Pirates.
