Lake Buena Vista, FL- Monte Morris’ 20 points and 9 rebounds helped lead the No. 21 Iowa Sate Cyclones to a 73-71 victory over Indiana State in game 1 of the 2016 Advocare Invitational. The Sycamores were lead by the combo of Brenton Scott and Laquarious Paige who both had 20 points and combined for 9 rebounds as they came up just short of the upset bid.
Indiana State and Iowa State started out fast and furious exchanging leads before Indiana State was able to get ahead by 5 with 15:11 left in the 1st half. After that it was more back and forth action, with Laquarious Paige leading the way for the Sycamores. In just the first 9 minutes of the game Paige had 11 points, but in total he was only on the floor for 6 minutes to get those points.
After Paige was subbed out, the Sycamores didn’t letup, finishing up a 10-3 run for a 29-21 lead with 7:51 left in the 1st half. After a quick rest, Paige came back in and hit two quick shots to give the Sycamores a 33-24 lead. That’s when the Cyclones got hot, going on a 10-0 run to take a 34-33 lead with 4:06 left in the half.
Indiana State was able to get a bucket to end the drought and take back the lead. However, then Iowa State added 5 more points to make it 39-35 extending a 15-2 run.
In the second half, Deonte Burton hit a jumper and was fouled to start things off for Iowa State. He missed the free throw and then Indiana State hit a pair triples coming from Paige and Brenton Scott to take a 48-45 lead with 16 minutes left in the game.
Then it was Iowa State’s turn, as Monte Morris hit a jumper, a layup and a triple to lead a 9-0 run that made it 54-48 Cyclones with 12:31 left on the clock. In true fashion of this one it was again the Sycamores, going on a 10-2 run of their own to take a 58-56 lead with 9:33 left in the game as Brenton Scott hit another triple.
With 5:04 left to play, Iowa State had regained the lead a 65-64 as Nazareth Mitrou-Long hit a triple. Things stayed close as Iowa State hit two free throws to tie the game up at 69 after Indiana State had taken back the lead. With 1:12 left to play, Indiana State was up 71-69 on the No. 21 Cyclones.
Then Matt Thomas hit a triple to give Iowa State the 72-71 lead with 54.9 left to play. Iowa State would add a free throw to their total and Indiana State would have a open shot attempt from 3 point land as Benton Scott put up the shot. It wouldn’t fall as the Cyclones would survive the Sycamores upset bid.
