Lake Buena Vista, FL- Deonte Burton’s 21 points and 7 rebounds helped lead the No. 21 Iowa State Cyclone’s to a 73-56 win over the Miami Hurricanes. The win clinches Iowa State a spot in the 2016 Advocare Invitational Championship game where they will face the winner between Florida and Gonzaga.
Iowa State’s Burton started off the scoring with a 3 pointer just 22 seconds into the game. Miami answered right back before the Cyclones went on a 8-2 run to take an 11-4 lead with 16:25 left in the 1st half. The ‘Canes then went on a 10-0 run to overtake the lead at 14-11 with 13:11 left on the game clock.
After Miami extended to a 12-0 run, Iowa State was able to tie the game back up at 16 with 9:02 left on the clock with a jumper from Burton. Over the next 6 minutes, there were 3 lead changes and 3 ties before Burton hit a layup to give the Cyclones a 4 point lead at 30-26 with 2:49 left in the half. Iowa State worked their lead and had a 35-29 lead on Miami as the teams went to the locker room at the half.
As the second half got underway, Iowa State continued where they left off with Monte Morris opening the scoring with a jumper to make it 37-29 Cyclones. The next 4 minutes was a come back effort by the ‘canes as they chipped away at the lead, cutting it to just two points with 16:02 left on the clock with a bucket from Ja’Quan Newton.
The Cyclones continued to push back against the ‘Canes and went on an 13-0 run to take a 56-44 lead with just under 10 minutes left to play. This forced Miami head coach Jim Larranaga to take a timeout with 9:20 left to play. This didn’t seem to help, as they turned the ball over twice and missed shots on back-to-back possessions for a total of 4 empty possessions after the timeout. All of which Iowa State failed to make any shots. This was a prime chance for the ‘canes to cut the lead.
With 5:38 left to play, the Cyclones had extended their run to a 20-2 run that had them up 63-46 on the Hurricanes. However with 5 minutes to play, the ‘Canes had cut the deficit to just 12 points. Then Deonte Burton drove down the court, hit a tough shot and was fouled on the way up. He made the and-one to put Iowa State up 66-51 with just 4:45 left to play. Miami was unable to cut the deficit and fell 72-56.
