Orlando, FL - Two players on the Monmouth roster scored 20 points or higher in Sunday’s play for third place.
Justin Robinson led the offensive with 27 points and 3 steals while Micah Seaborn maintained 20 points and the final play for the Harks on a layup. Fans chanted for a game MVP distinction to Robinson, where Hawks head coach King Rice noted the team will be ready to send the guard should he be awarded.
“I got to give credit to my teammates and coaches – they gave me the ball, gave me the confidence and I found a way to put the ball in the bucket,” Robinson said on the win. “Just to come out here and get the recognition that we worked for all summer and all of last spring is good. [Though] we can’t let it get to our heads – we still haven’t accomplished everything yet.”
Rice attributed the success of Robinson and players on the court to an active approach when advancing the ball. The bench made a headline for its cheers on three-pointers and dunks to which Rice eased on his self-described ‘tightness’ on the team and allowed minor celebration across the bench following a big play.
“Today I thought was an energy game. It’s hard for kids to play three days in a row and then you get the one day break and it’s almost harder to get going unless you’re in the championship. I told my guys ‘we just got to play with energy,’” Monmouth head coach King Rice said.
“There’s going to be one of the teams that grabs ahold of this game with their energy and that’s who going to win. Tonight that was us.”
Southern California edged out Wichita on Thursday to move through the brackets but fell short when playing Xavier, a team that has led by ten points or more in both of their games so far.
Guard Julian Jacobs put up 19 points for the Hawks, closely trailed by Bennie Boatwright’s 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Both teams anticipate an extended stay through Monday in Orlando and noted a preparedness for critical games in December when they return home.
The AdvoCare International finals will feature Xavier and Dayton at 4:30 p.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
