Orlando, FL- Friday night’s game picked up slowly as the first half played on to see the Flyers build a double-digit lead and the second spot in Sunday’s finals game.
The crowd favorites halted the Monmouth advances through the first half to hold the Hawks to 37-32, while never ceding a lead change - from tipoff to buzzer.
The Dayton team made the most of their 13 offensive rebounds to keep pace with Monmouth and secure a win. Monmouth had higher free throw and three-pointer game percentages but a 20% lower field goal percentage ate away at a chance for a lead.
The largest attended game of day 2 of the AdvoCare Invitational stacked 36 points in the paint for the Ohio team versus Monmouth’s 20.
The Hawks began to make a comeback with five minutes left in regular time, nearly passing up the leading score at 63-64. Critical fouls made on both sides inched the scores higher in three of the four remaining minutes.
Dayton broke free on a three pointer and a layup to ignite the crowd, 73-67 with 55 seconds to go. Monmouth’s last say came on their own three pointer to secure the game’s final score.
The midnight rally would be brought to 73-70 in a closely contested semi-final. Monmouth fans cheered on in part of an electric crowd.
Sunday’s finals will feature Xavier and Dayton at 4:30 p.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
