PINEHURST, N.C. — While most of the news during the offseason for Florida State has been off the field, Roberto Aguayo and Jalen Ramsey came to Pinehurst for ACC Kickoff looking forward to one thing… to just start playing football again.
“It’s unfortunate,” were the words Aguayo would start with anytime he was asked about anything that related to disciplinary issues. But once the conversation turned back to football the redshirt junior was giddy to talk about the upcoming season.
“What happened was unfortunate but we’re moving on.” said the 2013 Lou Groza award winner when asked about the off field issues recently reported. “We’ve got to be focused on football.”
But Aguayo wanted to make sure that all the good the FSU players do in the community isn’t overshadowed because of a few bad seeds.
“A lot of people don’t see the good that we do,” said Aguayo. “The community service we put in. I’ve been at a ton of community service that doesn’t get put on social media but it doesn’t bug me, I do it because I know it feels right and I know it’s the right thing to do and we do a lot of programs where we help the community and just being good people,
“But reporters don’t really go for the good things, they go for all the bad things but that’s the way life is but it’s unfortunate that people look at Florida State with that bad image when in reality 95 percent of the kids are good and we do so much more good things.”
Florida State opens up the season against FCS opponent Texas State before then taking on in-state foe USF. The Noles play rival Miami on October 10 in Tallahassee but playing a hated rival that early in the season isn’t something that worries the FSU players.
“We come to Florida State to play those guys,” said the redshirt junior kicker. “We come to Florida State to play Miami, we come to Florida State to play Florida, we come to play Clemson who ever is in our path, if they don’t move we’re going to have to move them.
“That’s the way we look at it, that’s the way our mindset is and it’s week by week, obviously right now it’s Texas State after Texas State it’s the next team. When Miami comes it’s going to be Miami.”
Ramsey is making the switch from the safety position to cornerback but the junior isn’t lacking any confidence as he feels he’s athletic enough to play any position on defense.
In a recently released depth chart head coach Jimbo Fisher had Sean Maguire starting at quarterback over Everett Golson, who transferred to Florida State during the off season.
“Sean has improved a lot since January,” said Aguayo of the ‘Noles current starting quarterback. “He knows he’s up for the task and it’s his job to hold.”
Despite a tough loss to Oregon to end their season on New Year’s Day, FSU is trying to pull the positives out of falling one game short of the National Championship game.
“It was a good learning experience,” said Aguayo about the loss at the Rose Bowl. “Because most of the players on the team didn’t know what losing was.”
The ‘Noles will start the season against Texas State on Saturday, Sept. 5 against Texas State with a 8 p.m. kickoff set at Doak Campbell Stadium. FSU will open up ACC play on Friday, Sept. 18 against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
