Philadelphia, PA - Once a year, 115 times before the United States Army and the Naval Academy square off in a historic and bitter rivalry matchup. After 30 minutes of play at Lincoln Financial Army leads Navy in a tightly contested matchup 17 to 14.
With the crowd set to 11, the smell of smoke from the fireworks and the chills after seeing the paratroopers land on field were finally settled with some football. Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds has made his impact early and often in this game. After giving up a field goal to Army, Reynolds responded with a 58 yard touchdown run on the second play of their second offensive possession.
Army however would not feel the pressure of the early touchdown and responded with their own big play. Freshman running back Tyler Campbell ran off right, bounced off a would be tackler and broke free for his eventual 29 yard touchdown run to put the Black Knights up 10 - 7. Traditionally not known as a “back and forth” contest this game has been nothing short of a brilliant chess match.
Navy’s star quarterback was far from finished in the half as Reynolds found Jamir Tillman down the sidelines for 35 yards and made history in the process. Reynolds finds himself as the only Navy player in history to exceed 1,000 yards in both rushing and passing TWICE. Reynolds also made national history becoming the NCAA’s all-time leader in touchdowns with his 84th and 85th touchdowns. His 85th was a one-yard run to put Navy ahead 14 to 10 at the time.
Just before half Army, a traditional running team with very few successful pass plays all season were not afraid to pass the ball. Chris Carter connected with the greatest name in college football Edgar Allen Poe on a 39-yard touchdown pass and Army finds themselves ahead at halftime. The last time Army led Navy at half was in 2011 and Army is putting up a brutal fight to end Navy’s 13 game win streak against them.
The second half promises to be entertaining in one, if not the most intense rivalry in College Football.
