***Storm Press Release***
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm wrapped up its second day of training camp, with the team finishing the installation of the offense and defense. These first two days were extremely important because it enabled the players to get familiar with the playbook; however the one thing the players could not get their minds off of was putting on the pads.
“We were productive today,” said Storm defensive back Jean Fanor. “We have an understanding of how practice will be formatted and we are excited about putting the pads on. Right now we’re in shorts and anyone can play in shorts but when the pads come on it makes a difference.”
The team also got a taste of some old school ironman football with the offense and defense swapping sides. Playing a game that has its roots in the ironman style of football, it is important for every player to understand the history and realize that at any time he may be called upon to play an offensive or defensive role.
“It’s important and exciting to understand what the other side will do,” said defensive back Chris Smith. “I’m always learning something new at practice. It doesn’t matter if its offense or defense, I want to be able to do my part when my number is called.”
Tomorrow the Storm will put the pads on. Look for some hard hits as the team will finally get a chance to prove its mettle.
Coaches Perspective: “The first two days were good for getting the butterflies out of the system,” said offensive coordinator Doug Miller. “As a coaching staff we did a good job with installation, getting these guys ready for pads. They’re hungry and the first day should be interesting for both the players and coaches.”
Quote of the Day: “I woke up this morning and asked myself ‘how can we be better,’” said kicker Carlos Lopez addressing the team. “In life, and the game of football, we must have a winning attitude to succeed. We are winners. Let’s get after it and accept nothing less than victory.”
Player Spotlight: After a one year absence, wide receiver Amarri Jackson is back in a Storm uniform.
“It’s great to be back in Tampa,” said Jackson. “I spent two seasons here and it will feel good to be back in front of this crowd. It doesn’t hurt playing for Coach Samuels either. I love playing for him and learning from him.”
Jackson spent the 2013 season with the Orlando Predators and the San Jose SaberCats. The former South Florida standout spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons with the Storm compiling 202 receptions for 2,631 yards and 55 touchdowns. In 2011 he set Storm rookie records in receptions (125) and receiving yards (1,619). Look for him to provide speed and sure hands to the receiving game this season.
