Devante Mays and Utah State (1-0) had their way with FCS opponent Weber State last week, but things get tougher as they head to the L.A. Coliseum to take on Pac 12 power USC (0-1). Mays, who had a career day last week rushed for 208 yards on 18 carries and 3 touchdowns, runs into a USC team looking to make a statement after an embarrassing 52-6 loss to 1. Alabama. Utah State, led by their running game, didn’t need much help from junior quarterback Kent Myers who passed for 100 yards on just 17 attempts. That may need to change as the defensive front seven of USC looks to prove it’s a more formidable unit than that which took the field against Alabama who rushed for 242 yards.
Not only did you lose 52-6, but the whole world saw it happen. The running game for USC only managed 64 yards rushing for the game, while the defense gave up a whopping 465 yards of total offense. Ranked 20th coming into the season, USC was considered a dark horse for the college football playoff, now they are out to prove they can play elite level football. Juju Smith-Schuster, one of the best wide receivers in the country was held to one catch for 9 yards, looks to have a monster game against a relatively thin secondary in Utah State.
Ever hear of “being in the wrong place at the wrong time”? Well, Utah State happens to be in the right place at the right time, for USC. After a deflating loss and falling out of the AP top 25 this is the perfect time for USC to prove doubters wrong and get some of that Southern Cal swagger back. Expect Devante Mays and Utah State to give Southern Cal everything they can handle, but expect USC’s defense to put the clamps on Mays and apply steady pressure to quarterback Kent Myers.
