ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Tuesday night marks the first ever basketball game in the War On I-4 rivalry series, as UCF hosts USF at 7 p.m. at CFE Arena. With the series tied at 15-15 following the fall seasons, the winner of Tuesday’s matchup will earn a crucial three points and give their school the first lead of 2017.
The Knights (13-4, 4-1 AAC) are coming off a critical 77-70 home victory over Houston and are now in third place in the American Athletic Conference standings. A win Tuesday night would earn UCF a 5-1 start to league play for the first time since joining The American and leave the Knights just one win shy of their largest ever win total in AAC play.
USF (6-10, 0-5) has struggled in 2016-17, losing its first five conference games and recently parting ways with head coach Orlando Antigua. Interim head coach Murry Bartow, former head coach at East Tennessee State, took over on Jan. 3 and has been at the helm for losses against SMU, Tulane and Memphis.
You can usually throw records out the window in a rivalry series, though. USF holds a 22-11 advantage in the all-time series against the Knights and even own an 8-6 lead in the series in games played in Orlando. However, UCF has won four of the last five games, including both meetings last season.
The two teams have five common opponents at this point in the 2016-17 season. USF defeated Bethune-Cookman in overtime, but lost to George Washington, East Carolina, Houston and Tulane. The Knights are 4-1 against those teams in 2016-17.
The Knights will look to get it done on defense, as they have done all season long. UCF comes in still leading the nation in field goal percentage defense (33.7) and defensive rebounding (33.4). The Knights are third in scoring defense (58.2) and second in total rebounds per game (44.4).
Tuesday’s contest will air on ESPNews with Roy Philpott and Mark Wise on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on FM 96.9 The Game, the iHeart radio app and the UCF Knights app with Marc Daniels and Taylor Young calling the action.
The first 500 students at the game will receive a “No Bull Tonight” t-shirt. Additionally, 50 lucky fans will pick up the January edition of the Knightro Bobblehead. Anyone who purchases an Anytime ticket this month will also receive the January Knightro Bobblehead.
Following Tuesday’s game, the next contest in the War On I-4 will be the women’s basketball matchup scheduled for Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in Tampa.
