Orlando, Fl- Freshman B.J. Taylor scored 23 points and grabbed 8 boards as the UCF Knights dominated the second half of their first exhibition game in 2 years to defeat Flagler 96-70 Tuesday night at CFE Arena. Junior guard Shaheed Davis added a double-double for the Knights with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Taylor scored 12 points and 4 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 40-35 first half lead on Flagler Tuesday. Sophomore Justin McBride came off the bench and added 7 points in just 6 minutes of work.
“I didn't plan on playing Justin tonight. He showed a little toughness tonight.” said UCF Head Coach Donnie Jones post game on McBride, “He sprained his ankle really good yesterday in practice. It swelled up and he was having a hard time even walking around. It shows he's excited, he's worked hard.”
The Knights were out rebounded 24-22 in the 1st, but they were able to capitalize of Flagler turnovers with 9 points coming off of 6 turnovers compared to just 2 points for Flagler on UCF’s 6 turnovers.
UCF also struggled at the line making just 7 of 15 shots for a 54% mark from the charity stripe, while Flagler touted a 71.4 free throw percentage in the 1st period.
UCF opened the second period with a 28-11 scoring run to put Flagler down 68-48 with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. Flagler would not draw closer than 18 for the rest of the game.
The Knights continued through the 2nd period shooting 76% from the field, while Flagler struggled to make any baskets, shooting just 32% from the field making just 5 of 15 baskets.
For the Saints, Senior Jerrell Oxendine led the way in scoring with 24 total points, while Senior Dennis Diaz grabbed 17 boards to lead Flagler.
UCF will face Georgia College next tuesday Nov. 11 at CFE Arena in their final exhibition matchup of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.
