Orlando, Fla- UCF Freshman Adonys Henriquez scored 21 points, shooting 5-7 from beyond the arc, leading the Knights to a 76-59 win over Eckard at CFE Arena. Senior Kasey Wilson added 5 second half rebounds and 11 points to help the Knights seal the victory.
The Knights got off to a fast start in the first half, going up 20-8 on the Tritons with 13:52 left in the first period as B.J. Taylor connected on a 3 pointer. Eckard then went on a 13-1 run in 2 minutes and 40 seconds to tie the game up at 21.
Eckard would turn 11 first half turnovers into 10 points and a 37-35 lead over UCF at the half. Sophomore Guard Kevin Walsh led the Tritons with 13 points at the Half.
“We got up 20-8, I subbed 3 guys guy off the bench. They come in and our energy went straight to the ground. We turned it over 4 times in a row right there for 8 of those points. So that put them (Eckard) right back in the game and changed the whole momentum.” said Head Coach Donnie Jones on the first half turnovers.
As the 2nd half got underway, Eckard was able to get out to their biggest lead of the game. Freshman Trevon Young connected on 2 quick jumpers for the Tritons, to make it 41-35 with 18:57 to play in the 2nd period.
UCF then went on a 22-6 run to take a 57-47 lead over Eckard with 9:36 to play in the half. The Knights wouldn’t let up and turned the tide on Eckard with 11 points off of the Tritions turnovers in the 2nd half on their way to a 76-59 win.
“I’ve been happy with how its been a close game and we have been able to separate ourselves.” said Coach Jones of the Knights 2-0 start to the season.
Jerrick Stevenson was the leading scorer for Eckard with 17 points, while E.J. Moody led the Tritons with 4 assists in the game.
UCF will now welcome USC Upstate to CFE Arena this Sunday, with a 6 pm scheduled tipoff.
